Can I Drive in Phuket with a UK Licence?

Yes, you can drive in Phuket on a UK photocard licence, as long as you carry an International Driving Permit of the 1968 convention type and your passport with it. The permit is bought in person at PayPoint shops in the UK and not in Thailand, so a forgotten IDP cannot be fixed after landing.

Short answer

Thailand reads a UK licence through the IDP. The photocard shows who you are and what you may drive, the permit puts that into the recognised international format, and the passport ties both to you. Police at a checkpoint and the insurer after a claim look for all three.

The PayPoint permit

British drivers get the IDP in person at shops with PayPoint, and for Thailand GOV.UK names the 1968 convention permit. Pick it up before the trip: nobody in Thailand issues one against a UK licence.

Keep the permit with the photocard from then on. The IDP repeats the categories on your licence, so it covers exactly what the photocard covers and adds nothing to it.

Driving on the left, again

Traffic in Thailand keeps to the left, like in the UK, so roundabouts, overtaking and the driver's seat on the right all feel normal. The difference is what surrounds you: scooters filter through gaps a British driver would leave empty, and they pass on either side. Give them room at junctions and check the mirror before you open the door after parking.

What that means for the rental

The cars are automatic, which suits the hills and the stop-start traffic around Patong and Kata even if you drive a manual at home. With the gear lever out of the way, your attention goes to the scooters and the bends.

Anyone else who will drive is added in advance with the same set: photocard, IDP, passport. Handing the keys to a partner who is not on the agreement voids the insurance, however short the drive.

At handover we check the photocard, the permit and the passport, then walk round the car with you: body, tyres, air conditioning and fuel level go into the record, and the rental agreement stays with you. The deposit is held at that moment and returned when the car comes back; cashless options are agreed before delivery.

A flight from the UK is a long travel day, so we can bring the car to arrivals or to your hotel, villa or apartment at any hour: first-class commercial insurance, refundable deposit, the total for your dates fixed in chat. Send the dates on WhatsApp or use the booking form; the page on car rental in Phuket covers the rest.

Step by step

One errand in the UK, then a few checks when the car arrives. The errand is the one step that cannot be made up later.

  • Get the 1968 IDP at a PayPoint shop before you fly — it is not issued in Thailand
  • Check the photocard is in date — an expired licence makes the permit useless
  • Pack photocard, IDP and passport together — they are checked as a set
  • Name every driver at booking — each needs the same documents
  • Walk round the car with us at handover — body, tyres, air conditioning and fuel level go on the record
  • Check the fuel grade on the sticker by the filler flap — the wrong fuel is paid for separately

Common mistakes

UK drivers tend to arrive confident about the road and short on paperwork.

The first mistake is assuming the photocard is enough on its own; outside ASEAN licences it is not. The second is leaving the PayPoint visit until it is too late and flying without the permit. The third is keeping the photocard in the hotel safe and driving with only the IDP, which on its own is not a licence. A fourth is driving on home autopilot in the rain: hill roads here turn slick fast, and braking has to start before the bend. For other countries, see where to get an International Driving Permit before you fly.

ImportantNo licence in the car, or a driver who is not on the agreement, and the insurance no longer applies. A scrape in a car park then turns into a repair bill for the driver alone.

What GOV.UK says about Thailand

The UK government page on international driving permits, gov.uk/driving-abroad/international-driving-permit, lists Thailand in its country table under the 1968 convention. That is the permit type to ask for when you buy it.

The same page says the IDP is bought in person at shops that have PayPoint, so it is sorted out in the UK before the flight.

For the rental nothing else changes: the photocard, the 1968 IDP and the passport are shown together at the handover, and the same set is what a police check asks for.

Common questions

Can I use my UK driving licence in Thailand?

Yes, together with an IDP of the 1968 convention type and your passport. The photocard alone is not enough for driving in Thailand.

Do British drivers need an IDP for Thailand?

Yes. Get it in person at a PayPoint shop in the UK before you travel; it is not issued in Thailand.

Is driving in Thailand hard for UK drivers?

The side of the road is the same, so the controls and roundabouts feel normal. The adjustment is the scooters, which filter through gaps and pass on either side.

Can I rent an automatic car with a UK licence?

Yes. The cars are automatic, with first-class commercial insurance and a refundable deposit. Bring the photocard, the IDP and your passport to the handover.

Can my partner drive the car too?

Yes, once added to the agreement in advance with their own photocard, IDP and passport. An unlisted driver voids the insurance.

Which IDP do I need for Thailand with a UK licence?

The 1968 convention IDP. GOV.UK lists Thailand under the 1968 convention on its international driving permit page, and the permit is bought in person at a PayPoint shop.
