Can I Drive in Phuket with an Indian Licence?

Yes, you can drive in Phuket with an Indian licence, but only together with an International Driving Permit issued by the RTO and your passport. India is not an ASEAN member, so the licence alone is not enough, and a card printed only in a regional language makes the permit even more important.

Short answer

Thailand accepts a licence without a permit only from ASEAN countries. For an Indian licence the working set is three documents: the licence, the IDP issued against it, and the passport. The permit on its own is not a licence, so the card travels with it.

Where to get the IDP

The IDP is issued in India by the RTO, the same office system that handles your licence. Apply before the trip: the permit comes from the country that issued the licence, so it cannot be arranged once you land in Phuket.

Keep the permit and the licence together from then on. The IDP repeats the categories on your card, so it allows exactly what the Indian licence allows and nothing more.

Regional language licences

If the card is printed in a regional language with no English, a police officer or an insurer in Phuket cannot read it at all. The IDP is then the only readable version of your licence, which is why these cards need the permit even more.

What that means for the rental

Traffic in Thailand keeps to the left, as in India, so the driving side feels familiar from the first turn. That leaves you free to choose the car for the trip: a compact automatic for a couple, a larger one for a family with luggage and a day of hill roads ahead.

Each driver goes on the agreement in advance with the full set: licence, IDP, passport. Families often share the driving on longer days out; add the second name before delivery, because a driver who is not listed voids the insurance.

At handover we check all three documents and walk round the car with you: body, tyres, air conditioning and fuel level are recorded, and the rental agreement stays with you. The deposit is held at that point and returned when the car comes back; cashless options are agreed before delivery.

Landing late at Phuket Airport? The car can be waiting at arrivals, or delivered to the hotel, villa or apartment at any hour: automatic, first-class commercial insurance, refundable deposit, the total for your dates fixed in chat. Send the dates on WhatsApp or use the booking form; the page on car rental in Phuket has the full picture.

Which documents every driver needs, and why the permit matters: driving licence rules in Thailand.

Step by step

The permit is the part that needs planning, since it comes from the RTO in India and nothing replaces it here; the rest is routine at handover.

  • Apply for the IDP at the RTO before you fly — it is not issued in Thailand
  • Check that the names on the licence, the IDP and the passport match — the three are read as one set
  • Carry the original licence card — the permit is void without it
  • Add every driver when you book — each needs the same three documents
  • Go over the car with us at handover — body, tyres, air conditioning and fuel go on record
  • Read the fuel sticker by the filler flap — the wrong grade is paid for separately

Common mistakes

With an Indian licence, nearly every mistake is about the permit.

Arriving without the IDP and hoping the licence will do is the first: outside ASEAN it will not. Bringing a regional-language card with no permit is the second, since nobody at a checkpoint can read it. The third is carrying the permit but leaving the card at the hotel. A fourth is agreeing between yourselves who drives without putting the second name on the agreement. Familiar left-hand traffic makes people relaxed about paperwork, and the paperwork is exactly what the police and the insurer check.

ImportantA driver who is not listed, or a licence left behind, voids the insurance. After a collision the whole cost of the damage then stays with the driver, so make sure every name is on the agreement before the keys change hands.

Applying for the IDP in India

Parivahan, the transport portal of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, sets out the procedure. The International Driving Permit is issued to a resident of India who holds a valid Indian licence, and you apply on Form 4A, or in writing, to the RTO that covers your address.

The application names the countries you will visit and how long you will stay, so put Thailand on it. Parivahan lists the requirements as the valid licence with copies, copies of the passport, the visa where applicable and the air ticket, plus the prescribed fee.

Apply early enough for the permit to be in your hands before the flight. Nothing issued in Thailand replaces it, and at the handover the licence, the IDP and the passport are checked together.

Common questions

Is an Indian driving licence valid in Thailand?

Only with an International Driving Permit issued by the RTO in India, plus your passport. India is not part of the ASEAN agreement, so the licence alone does not cover driving.

Can Indians drive in Thailand?

Yes, with the Indian licence, an IDP and a passport. Traffic keeps to the left, as at home, so the driving side is familiar.

How do I get an IDP for Thailand from India?

Apply at the RTO before the trip. The permit is issued against your Indian licence and cannot be obtained in Thailand.

My licence is in a regional language. What do I need?

The IDP matters even more: it is the only version of your licence that police and insurers in Phuket can read. Carry it with the card and your passport.

Can two of us share the driving?

Yes. Add the second driver in advance with a licence, an IDP and a passport. A driver who is not listed voids the insurance.

What documents does the RTO ask for with Form 4A?

Parivahan lists a valid Indian licence with copies, copies of your passport, the visa where applicable and the air ticket, plus the prescribed fee.

What documents and deposit do Indian tourists need to rent a car in Phuket?

A passport, the Indian driving licence and an International Driving Permit issued in India, for every person who will drive. The refundable deposit depends on the model, from 5,000 to 30,000 ฿, and the search shows the amount for your car.
