Phuket to Bangkok by Car

How the route works

Navigationally this is one of the simplest long drives anywhere: leave the island, join the main highway north, and stay on it for most of a day. There are very few decisions to make.

Three sections

The first runs up the Andaman coast through Phang Nga and Ranong, winding in places and scenic. The second crosses the narrow isthmus and is the dullest part: long, straight, hot and monotonous, which is where tiredness becomes the actual risk. The third approaches Bangkok through increasingly heavy traffic and ends in city driving that is a different sport altogether.

Plan the overnight stop for the end of the second section rather than the middle. Arriving into Bangkok tired, in the dark, in dense traffic, is the part of this trip that goes wrong.

What it means for the car

This is the one route from Phuket where the condition of the car genuinely matters, because you will be asking it for a full day of sustained highway speed in high temperatures.

What to check before you leave

Tyre pressures and tread, because a blowout at highway speed is a different event from a puncture in town. Coolant and the temperature gauge behaviour. Air conditioning, which will run continuously for twelve hours. Wipers and washer fluid. And brakes, checked properly on the road before you commit.

Do not drive it at night

The highway carries heavy lorries around the clock, and there are unlit vehicles, animals and unmarked junctions. Night driving on this road is the single biggest risk of the trip and it is entirely avoidable by starting at dawn instead.

Where to stop and where to stay

Chumphon and Hua Hin are the natural overnight points and both are easy to reach at a reasonable hour if you leave Phuket early.

Along the route there are large roadside service areas with fuel, food, toilets and shade, and they are much better than the small roadside stalls for a proper break. Stop every two hours whether or not you feel like it.

Parking in Bangkok

City parking is a real subject. Use hotel parking or a shopping centre car park rather than looking for street space, which mostly does not exist in the central districts. Bangkok traffic also means your car may be less useful in the city than it was getting there.

Fuel stations on the highway are plentiful and the branded ones take cards, with attendants who fill the tank for you.

When the drive is worth it

Honestly, not often. For most visitors a flight makes more sense, and the drive is only worth it when the journey is the point or when you are moving belongings rather than yourself.

Where it does make sense is a longer relocation, a group splitting the driving, or a trip where you want to stop along the way at places that no flight goes to.

What to see on the way

The Andaman coast in the first section has quiet beaches and viewpoints. The gulf coast after the isthmus has its own long beaches. Treated as a two or three day journey with proper stops, this becomes a trip rather than a slog.

Cars that suit this

Take the most comfortable thing you can. Long highway hours reward a quiet cabin, supportive seats and strong air conditioning far more than they reward compact dimensions.

About drivers

Two named drivers, always, so you can swap every couple of hours. A single driver doing thirteen hours is how this trip becomes dangerous, and adding a second name at handover takes a minute.
