Kamala to Kata by Car in Phuket
Kamala to Kata is three climbs down the west coast of Phuket: 15 min over the pass to Patong, about 15 min on the coast road over the next pass to Karon, then 5 min over one hill into Kata. That adds up to around 35 min of driving on clear roads, plus however long the streets of Patong hold you in the middle. On a high season afternoon the crawl through Patong and the hunt for a space in Kata can take longer than all three climbs together.

How long does it take to drive from Kamala to Kata?
Around 35 minutes of actual driving. Getting through Patong is the variable.
You leave Kamala on the 4025, which is also the village's main street, and climb straight into the pass: a long ascent with two sharp bends and a viewpoint at the top, then the drop into Patong. Fifteen minutes. Through town you pick up the coast road south, climb the second pass with its tight bends and tour coaches, and come down into Karon, another fifteen. The last hill into Kata is five minutes and feels like nothing after the first two.
There are three places worth stopping on the way, one on each climb. At the top of the Kamala pass there is a viewpoint. At the top of the pass between Patong and Karon, a platform looks back over Patong bay. Halfway up the hill between Karon and Kata there is another above Karon bay, with room to pull in. None adds much to the trip, and together they make the route feel like a day out rather than a commute.
Why not just take a taxi?
For a single dinner, you could. For a day on the southern beaches, with Kata, Kata Noi and maybe Nai Harn on the list, the car is what makes it one relaxed trip rather than a string of rides. Count the fares for a day of three beaches and back, and the answer usually writes itself.
If you are staying in Kamala and planning the southern beaches, we deliver the car to your hotel or villa at any hour: automatic, first-class commercial insurance, a refundable deposit from 5,000–30,000 ฿ depending on the model, the total for your dates fixed in chat. Send the dates and the address in the chat, or use the booking form.
What that means for the car
Three descents in one drive is the whole story. Brakes are what this route tests, not the engine.
Any class makes the trip, provided it goes down each hill in a low gear. An economy car is the easy one to park in Kata's narrow streets at the end. A crossover makes sense if your Kamala villa sits up a steep drive, or if the day includes Kata Noi, where the road goes up and down on a gradient and there is little room to turn. Behind a loaded pickup on the Kamala pass, in rain or after dark, the same climb feels twice as long whatever you drive.
The hill into Kata deserves one extra line. The descent is long for such a short road, and the corner at the bottom is hidden behind greenery, so come down slowly and expect a scooter or a parked car right round the bend.
Getting through Patong in the middle
Patong is the bottleneck of this route. You enter from the north over the Kamala pass and leave from the south on the coast road, and in between lie the densest streets on the island.
Earlier in the day the crossing is quicker. In the evening, with scooters, pedestrians walking in the road and permanent double parking in the narrow centre, it slows to a crawl. Keep moving, do not stop to drop anyone on the beach road, and trust the coast road signs south towards Karon.
ImportantDo not pull over on the Patong beach road to let someone out or check the map. Tow trucks work it steadily, and a red and white kerb means no stopping at all, even with the engine running.
Where to park in Kata
Parking, not the road, is the real delay at the Kata end. In high season the beach car park is full from the morning.
Arrive early or after four if Kata Noi is your beach, because that single road fills with hotel guests' cars in between. At the main Kata beach, leave the car on the side streets further up the slope and walk down for a few minutes. That walk is shorter than a second lap round the bay.
- Leave Kamala early — the Kata beach car park fills from the morning
- Cross Patong before the evening — scooters and pedestrians fill the centre later
- Kata Noi — early or after four, or not at all
- Main Kata beach — side streets up the slope, then walk
The drive back to Kamala at night
The return runs the same three climbs in reverse, and at night the last one is the hardest. The Kamala pass has no lights for its whole length, and after dark it needs a different speed altogether: dipped lights, a low gear down the far side, room for scooters coming up.
If you drive the south often from here, the individual legs are worth reading on their own: Patong to Kamala by car for the northern pass, Patong to Kata by car for the southern part, and Kata Noi Beach by car for parking at the smaller bay. For a base on the coast, see car rental in Kamala.
Renting a car for this drive
No car yet for this trip? It can be delivered to your hotel or villa anywhere on the island, and delivery is counted separately from the daily rental rate. At handover you leave a refundable deposit that depends on the model, and first-class commercial insurance covers the drivers named in the contract. Every car we deliver is an automatic, and renting a manual car in Phuket is rarely an option. Prices by model and the rest of the terms: how car rental with us works. For pick-up in Kamala, see cars for rent in Kamala. Car rental near the end of the drive: cars for rent in Kata.
Also useful before you book: a car for two weeks.

Common questions
How far is Kata from Kamala by car?
Around 35 minutes of driving on clear roads: 15 to Patong, about 15 to Karon and 5 into Kata. Traffic in Patong and parking in Kata add to that in high season.
Do I have to drive through Patong to get from Kamala to Kata?
Yes, on the coastal route. You come in over the Kamala pass and leave on the coast road south, so the crossing of Patong sits in the middle of the trip.
Is the road from Kamala to Kata steep?
It has three climbs: two real passes and one low hill. Each descent should be taken in a low gear so the brakes do not overheat.
Is it safe to drive back from Kata to Kamala at night?
Yes, at a slower pace. The Kamala hill road is unlit for its whole length, so use dipped lights, keep a low gear on the descent and watch for scooters.
Where do I park at Kata Noi coming from Kamala?
On the single road above the beach, early in the morning or after four. In between, that one road fills with hotel guests' cars.
Which car is best for Kamala to Kata trips?
An economy car for easy parking in Kata, a crossover if your Kamala villa has a steep drive. Any class works on the passes in a low gear.
