Phuket Airport to Kamala by Car
The drive from Phuket Airport to Kamala takes 30–35 min in calm traffic, south on Thepkrasattri and then across to the west coast on the 4025. At rush hour or in heavy rain it takes longer, while a late-night arrival usually finds Kamala itself almost empty of traffic.

How long it takes and which road
With free-flowing traffic the run from the terminal to Kamala is 30–35 min. You leave the airport south on Thepkrasattri, then take the 4025 west towards the coast. Once you reach Kamala there is one main road along the sea, so the last part of the trip needs no map at all.
Where the traffic stops
The drive stretches at rush hour, when the main roads out of the airport area fill with commuters and delivery trucks, and in rain, when speeds drop and drivers bunch up behind the slowest vehicle. The hour of your flight matters more on this route than the distance: the same drive at midnight and at six in the evening can feel like two different trips.
If this is your first time on the left, the 4025 gives you time to settle in before the coast. Our page on left-hand driving covers the habits worth fixing before you set off, and the driving licence rules page explains which documents to carry in the car.
What that means for the car
Take an automatic. The airport run itself is gentle, but most people staying in Kamala end up driving to Patong, 15 min over the pass, and the climb and long descent there are much calmer with the selector in L or B than with a clutch.
Match the car to the bags first. A couple with carry-ons fits in a hatchback. A family with suitcases, a stroller and beach gear for a week needs a sedan or a compact SUV, because the boot fills before the seats do.
Cool the cabin before you load it: switch on the air conditioning while the car stands in the car park, then put the bags in. In the wet season check the tyres before leaving the airport; the descent on the Patong side of the pass is where tread depth matters on wet asphalt.
A local based in Kamala picks an automatic compact SUV or a mid-size sedan: comfortable on the quiet main road, strong enough for the pass, and with enough clearance for puddles after an afternoon storm.
If you are landing at Phuket Airport and heading to Kamala, we can have the car waiting at arrivals: automatic, first-class commercial insurance, refundable deposit, the total for your dates fixed in chat. Send the dates on WhatsApp or through the booking form; the page on car rental in Kamala describes the district in more detail.
Car at the airport or car at the hotel?
Both routes into a Kamala holiday work, and the choice comes down to the landing time and your group. Our page on car rental in Phuket covers the island as a whole.
Picking the car up at arrivals suits a night landing, travelling with children, or a pile of luggage that would not fit a standard taxi. One handover, one load, and you drive straight to the hotel or villa.
A taxi or Grab first, with the car delivered to your hotel or villa later, suits anyone who is exhausted after a long flight or has never driven on the left. Kamala is quiet enough that the first drive can wait until you have slept.
- Midnight landing with children — car at arrivals, no second transfer
- First time on the left — Grab to the villa, car delivered the next day
- Lots of luggage — car at arrivals, the bags go in once
- Staying at a villa — delivery straight to the villa, at any hour
Where to park in Kamala
Kamala is a quiet stretch of the west coast between Patong and the road to Surin. Traffic on the main street is calm, and at night almost nothing moves, so parking is simpler than in Patong next door. If your hotel or villa has its own space, use it and walk to the beach rather than stopping along the main road in the afternoon.
The car earns its keep on day trips: Patong is 15 min over the pass, and the road north to Surin starts right at the edge of Kamala. Leave Patong before the evening crowd so the drive back over the pass happens in daylight.
ImportantDo not stop on a red and white kerb or block a villa gate, even for a few minutes. That is the quickest way to find the car clamped or towed, followed by a fine and a trip to collect it.
The way back to the airport
Kamala to Phuket Airport is the same 30–35 min on the 4025 in calm traffic. Plan backwards from check-in: the drive, a margin for rush hour or rain, then time to return the car and walk into departures.
Returning the car
Refuel to the level in your contract, empty the boot and the door pockets, and photograph the car from all four sides plus the fuel gauge before you give back the keys. Walk around it with our driver; comparing pickup and return photos settles any question about a scratch on the spot.
Renting a car for this drive
What a car costs for this trip depends on the class and on how long you keep it: see the price per day in Phuket, and the search gives the total for your dates. We deliver the car to your hotel or villa at any hour, and a refundable deposit is taken at handover, its size depending on the model. First-class commercial insurance is included, and every car we deliver is an automatic, since manual cars are rare in Phuket.
