Karon is a long beach between Patong and Kata, with a wide seafront road and buildings set one or two rows back from the sea. Karon is comfortable for a driver: a wide seafront road, a clear roundabout in the middle of the village, and spaces along the beach almost always free. That is a rarity on the west coast.
Kata is five minutes away in a straight line, Patong fifteen over the hill on good asphalt. You reach the viewpoint over the three beaches in ten minutes, and it is the easiest mountain road on the island.
If you are staying in a hotel on the slope, look at an SUV: the climbs in the upper part of Karon are short, but with a full car an economy model labours, especially in the rain.
There are petrol stations in Karon and Kata, but few cash machines with a sensible fee — withdraw cash in advance, as some car parks and markets take nothing else.
The roads around Karon
Karon sits on flat ground, and that is its main difference from its neighbours: inside the area there are no winding roads and no steep climbs. A straight seafront road runs along the beach, with a second street of shops and cafes parallel to it.
North the road goes to Patong over the hill: a moderate climb and a descent with two bends that the tour buses use. In season this stretch is busy in the evening.
South it is five minutes to Kata over a low pass with a viewpoint at the top. The same road carries on to Nai Harn and Promthep Cape.
Where to park
The Karon seafront is a rare case in Phuket where there really are plenty of free spaces by the sea. The row along the beach runs almost the whole length of the area, and even in high season you find a space within a couple of hundred metres.
It is tight at the roundabout in the centre and by the market: buses and taxis stop there. Better to drive further along the beach and walk back.

Which car you need in Karon
The flat roads of the area make an economy car an easy choice. It is also the better option for trips to Patong and Kata: the narrow streets next door are simpler in a short car.
An SUV makes sense if you are staying on the hill — the driveways to those houses are steep, and on the way down confident braking matters more than saving on fuel. People take a minivan for luggage and group size, but parking one by the market is awkward.

Traffic and what the season changes
During the day traffic inside the area is calm; the main flow passes by on the road between Patong and Kata. It picks up towards evening when people drive out for dinner.
In the rainy season parts of the seafront flood briefly after a downpour — the water drains fast, but do not drive blind through a puddle: there can be an open storm drain under it.
The surf at Karon is strong from May to October, and red flags stand along the beach through those months. It has nothing to do with renting a car, but it is easier to plan the day knowing you will swim somewhere else — in the bay at Kata, for instance.

Where people drive from Karon
The inner circle is Kata and Nai Harn to the south, Patong to the north. All within twenty minutes, and that is enough for a weekend.
Beyond that, two routes work well from Karon: the south with Promthep and Rawai, and the east with Phuket Town and the piers. The town is about forty minutes away through Chalong, on a simple road with good asphalt.
The northern beaches are far from here — an hour and more. If you want Mai Khao or Nai Yang, it makes sense to set off in the morning and plan the whole day around it.
