Karon Beach, Phuket by Car: Parking and the Road In
Parking at Karon Beach is free along the seafront road, the longest run of free spaces in the south of Phuket, and the beach is 15 min from Patong on the coast road and 5 min from Kata over one hill. Karon is flat, the buildings stand a row or two back from the water, so you park facing the sea rather than hunting through side lanes. The plan gets tighter an hour before sunset, when half the south drives in for the same view.

Is there parking at Karon Beach?
Yes, and plenty of it. That is the main reason people pick Karon for a beach day by car.
The seafront road runs the length of the bay with the sand on one side and a long row of kerbside spaces on the other, and parking there costs nothing. Behind it the hotels and cafes sit back from the water, so the road is wide enough that pulling in and out does not stop the traffic. Compare that with Patong, where the beach front is paid and full by lunchtime, or Kata, where the bays are short: Karon is the easy one.
So when is it actually hard?
Late afternoon in high season. From about an hour before sunset the spaces near the middle of the beach go quickly, because people from Kata and Patong come here to watch it from the sand. Arrive earlier, or accept a few minutes' walk from the northern or southern end.
If you are staying anywhere in the south and want a car for beach days like this, we bring it to your hotel or villa at any hour: automatic, first-class commercial insurance, refundable deposit, and the total for your dates agreed in the chat before we set off.
What that means for the car
Any class works here. Karon is flat inside the village and the seafront spaces are long enough for a crossover, so the parking question that decides the car in Kata or Patong mostly disappears.
What decides it is the road in. From Patong you climb the pass and come down towards Karon on bends, and from Kata you cross a single hill with a long descent on the Kata side. Both are fine for an economy automatic. Hold a lower gear on the way down and the brakes stay cool.
One small habit pays off at the beach: park facing out if you can. Reversing into the traffic on the seafront road at sunset, with scooters coming both ways, is the only awkward moment of the whole day.
Where to park at Karon Beach
Start in the middle and work outwards. The central stretch has the cafes and the most shade, the ends of the bay are quieter and fill later.
Leave nothing on the seats. The beach road is busy, the car sits in full view all day, and a bag on the passenger seat is an invitation. Put valuables in the boot before you arrive, not after you park.
- Seafront road, middle of the bay — closest to cafes, first to fill
- Northern and southern ends — quieter, a short walk along the sand
- Your hotel's own parking — the calm option on a sunset evening
- Painted kerbs and corners — never, however short the stop
ImportantDo not stop on a painted kerb along the beach road, even to drop someone off with the bags. It is exactly the kind of short stop that ends with a fine or a tow truck.
Getting to Karon from Patong, Kata and the airport
From Patong it is 15 min south on the coast road over the pass. From Kata, 5 min over the hill, and halfway up there is a small pull-in on a bend with the view over Karon bay: stop there on the way in, not on the way out, when you would have to cross the traffic.
From Phuket Airport allow 45 to 50 minutes in calm traffic. The evening rush slows the stretch around Chalong, so a late afternoon arrival can take noticeably longer. The route is laid out in Phuket Airport to Karon by car.
Karon, Kata or Patong for a beach day by car?
If the car decides it, Karon wins. Three neighbouring beaches, three very different parking stories, all within twenty minutes of each other.
Patong's beach front is paid and gone by lunchtime, and the streets behind it are narrow. Kata has short bays by the sand that fill early, and the realistic windows there are the morning and after four. Karon has the long free row on a flat road, which is why we often suggest parking here and walking over the headland if you want to see Kata as well.
Karon is also the easiest place in the south to practise driving on the left. The seafront road is flat and straight, the traffic moves slowly, and there is nothing steep to handle until you choose to leave the bay.
Leaving after sunset
Everyone leaves at once. Once the sun goes down the seafront road is a slow line of cars and scooters, and the climbs to Kata and Patong start in the dark.
Staying for dinner on the beach road is the easy fix. By the time you finish, the road is empty, and the drive over the hill is the same few minutes it was in the morning. For the whole district, see car rental in Karon.

Common questions
Is parking at Karon Beach free?
Yes. The spaces along the seafront road cost nothing, and it is the longest stretch of free parking in the south of Phuket. They are busiest in the hour before sunset.
What time should I arrive at Karon Beach to find a space?
Any time before late afternoon is easy. From about an hour before sunset the middle of the beach fills up, so come earlier or park at one of the ends.
How long is the drive from Patong to Karon Beach?
About 15 minutes on the coast road over the pass. Use a low gear on the descent, especially in the rain.
Can I park a large SUV at Karon Beach?
Usually, yes. The seafront road is wide and flat, and the kerbside spaces take a crossover or a full-size SUV more easily than the short bays in Kata.
Is there a viewpoint near Karon Beach by car?
Yes, on the road between Karon and Kata. It is a small pull-in on a bend halfway up the hill, easiest to reach when you are heading south.
How far is Karon Beach from Phuket Airport?
About 45 to 50 minutes by car in calm traffic. At the evening rush the stretch around Chalong slows down, so allow extra time.
