What airport pickup gives you

The obvious advantage is that you stop paying for a transfer and stop waiting for one. You land, you walk out, the car is there, and you are in charge of your own timetable from that minute.

The less obvious advantage is the first drive itself. The road out of the terminal is the best road on the island: wide, well surfaced, clearly signed and not very busy. As a first experience of driving on the left, it is far kinder than a hill road or a resort street.

Who this definitely suits

People staying in the north or on the near west coast, where the drive is short. Anyone landing in daylight. Families who want to stop for food or a supermarket on the way rather than arriving at a hotel with nothing. And anyone who has driven on the left before and simply wants to get on with the holiday.

What hotel delivery gives you

Delivery to your accommodation removes the drive you are least prepared for: the one at the end of a flight, possibly at night, on an unfamiliar side of the road, to a place you have never seen.

You take a transfer, sleep, wake up on the island, and the car arrives the next morning when you are rested and it is daylight. For a lot of people that is worth more than the day of rental they gave up.

The other effect

It also means you only pay for the car for the days you actually use it. If your first day is a beach day within walking distance, having a car parked outside for it achieves nothing.

Handing it back

The same logic works in reverse. We collect from your hotel, or you leave the car at the airport, whichever suits your flight. A late departure usually argues for keeping the car until the airport; an early one often argues for handing it over the night before.

What it means for the car

Whichever you choose, the handover matters more than the location. Walk around the car with the person delivering it, photograph the corners, the wheels and the windscreen, and get the fuel level agreed before anyone leaves.

The first kilometres

If you are collecting at the terminal after a flight, give yourself five quiet minutes before you move. Mirrors, seat, navigation set and mounted, air conditioning on. Almost every first-day problem comes from starting to drive before the car is set up.

Luggage

Check that your bags actually fit before you commit to the smallest class, particularly if you are four people with hold luggage. This is the single most common mismatch between what people book and what they need, and it is obvious at the terminal and awkward everywhere else.

Agreeing the timing

Send us your flight number and landing time when you book. Flights move, and a flight number lets us track the actual arrival rather than the scheduled one, so nobody is standing around and nobody is waiting.

What to settle in advance

Where exactly you will meet at the terminal, or the precise address and any gate or barrier details for a delivery. Who is driving, so the paperwork is ready. Whether you need a child seat. And the return: place, time and whether you want us to collect.

Cars that suit this

For an airport pickup with a long onward drive, prioritise comfort and cold air conditioning over compact dimensions. You will do the difficult parking later in the week, when you are not tired.

For a hotel delivery in a tight resort district, the opposite applies: take something small that lives easily in the streets you will actually use.

The middle option
