Mai Khao to Patong by Car
From Mai Khao the airport terminal is a short, straight run, and from the terminal Patong is 40–45 min in calm traffic on the west road via Thalang, ending with the climb over the pass from Kamala. Rush hour and rain make it longer, and at night the way back north is dark for long stretches.

How long it takes and which road
Mai Khao is the nearest beach district to the airport terminal, and the run to it is short and straight. That is the good news. The long drives south start here, and every trip is longer than the same trip from Kamala or Karon, because you cover the length of the west coast.
The route runs past the terminal, south on the west road through Thalang, and ends with the climb over the pass from Kamala that drops you into Patong. From the terminal to Patong is 40–45 min in calm traffic. We have not timed the whole run from Mai Khao as one figure, so we do not add the two parts together.
When it takes longer
Rush hour and rain stretch the run. In Patong itself, Bangla Road closes to traffic from eight in the evening and navigation sends you round it, so add fifteen minutes to any trip into the centre after eight.
What that means for the car
Distance is the main thing here, not difficulty. The road is flat with no passes until the very end, so comfort counts more than power: a quiet cabin, decent seats and an automatic for the stop and go. The drive south from the north involves a lot of standing in traffic, and that is where the air conditioning earns its keep.
The one climb is the pass from Kamala into Patong. Use the low range on the selector on the way down instead of riding the brakes, and keep left on the bends.
Fuel needs a plan. Around Mai Khao there are long sections with no petrol station, shop or lighting, and Patong has stations only on its exits, on the road to Kathu and at the foot of the pass, none in the centre. Fill up on the main road while you still have half a tank.
If you are staying in Mai Khao and want Patong for an evening or a day, we can bring an automatic to your hotel or villa at any hour: first-class commercial insurance, a refundable deposit, the total for your dates fixed in chat. Send the dates on WhatsApp or through the booking form; car rental in Mai Khao explains how the district works.
Two ways into Patong
There are two ways into Patong, and the time of day picks between them. The west road ends with the climb over the pass from Kamala. The inland alternative goes through Kathu and suits a morning arrival, but it jams in the evening rush.
In Kamala the road is the 4025, which doubles as the village's main street. North of Kamala, towards Surin and Bang Tao, it is flat and without bends, the calmest road on the west coast. Our page on Phuket Airport to Patong describes the approach into town in more detail.
- Come in through Kathu in the morning — the inland road suits a morning arrival
- Take the pass from Kamala in the evening — the Kathu road jams in the evening rush
- Drop to the low range at the top of the pass — the gearbox does the braking on the way down
- Add fifteen minutes after eight — Bangla Road is closed and navigation sends you round
Where to park in Patong
Read the kerb before anything else. Red and white means no stopping, and in the evenings the tow truck works the seafront. Yellow and white allows a brief stop or drop-off only. A plain kerb means you can park.
Beach spaces are paid and gone by lunchtime in high season. The calmest option is the roof of the Jungceylon shopping centre: there are always spaces, there is shade, and Bangla Road is ten minutes on foot. The second choice is the side streets closer to the hill above Rat-U-Thit, free but narrow. More in where to park in Patong and on the page about car rental in Patong.
After a downpour the low streets fill to the kerb. Do not drive through them; wait or go round.
ImportantDo not leave the car on a red and white kerb in Patong, even briefly. The tow truck clears the seafront in the evenings, and coming back to an empty kerb is the quickest way to lose the night.
The way back to Mai Khao at night
The drive back is the harder half. At night the Patong to Kamala road needs a completely different speed: blind bends, no verge, oncoming main beam on the climb, and scooters often with no rear light. Hill roads are unlit for their entire length.
Further north the dark gets serious. Around Mai Khao there are long unlit sections with no petrol station or shop, so the half-tank rule matters most on the way home. Our notes on driving at night cover the habits that help.
Taxi or drive?
If you have been drinking, the answer is fixed: the car stays where it is and you take a taxi, because the insurance does not work at all. Plan for the wait. On-demand taxis do reach Mai Khao, but you wait longer than anywhere else on the island, and the return trip at night is the awkward one.
For a sober evening, driving back is the simpler way home. For daytime trips along the coast, see the northern beaches by car, and for other districts start from car rental in Phuket.

Common questions
How long is the drive from Mai Khao to Patong?
There is no single measured figure. The run from Mai Khao to the terminal is short and straight, and from the terminal Patong is 40–45 min in calm traffic; rush hour, rain and the Bangla Road closure after eight all add time.
Which road should I take from Mai Khao to Patong?
South past the terminal on the west road through Thalang, then over the pass from Kamala into Patong. The inland road through Kathu suits a morning arrival but jams in the evening rush.
Where can I park in Patong for the evening?
On the roof of the Jungceylon shopping centre: there are always spaces, shade, and Bangla Road is ten minutes on foot. The side streets near the hill above Rat-U-Thit are free but narrow. Avoid red and white kerbs, where the tow truck works in the evenings.
Is the drive back to Mai Khao at night difficult?
It needs care more than skill. The Patong to Kamala road has blind bends, no verge and oncoming main beam, and further north there are long unlit sections. Fill up on the way out of Patong and drive slower than in daylight.
Is a taxi a better idea than driving back from Patong?
Only if you have been drinking, and then it is not optional: the insurance does not work at all and the car stays. Otherwise driving is simpler, because on-demand taxis reach Mai Khao but the wait is longer than anywhere, especially at night.
