Why the north feels far without your own wheels
Mai Khao is a different Phuket from the one most people picture. There is no beach road lined with bars, no row of tuk-tuks at the end of the soi, and the resorts sit far apart behind the trees. That is exactly why people book here: an empty beach at sunrise and a quiet evening.
The catch shows on the second day. Breakfast is fine at the hotel, but a supermarket run, dinner somewhere other than the resort restaurant or a morning on a southern beach all start with the same question of how to get there. A taxi has to come up from another area, and every evening out means booking two rides. With a car parked at the villa, the north stops being remote and becomes a quiet base with the whole island in reach.
Driving up here is relaxed. The roads are flat, traffic is light outside the main road, and you are close enough to the terminal that early flights stop being a worry.
Distances from Mai Khao to the places you will actually go
Times below are from Google Maps and OpenStreetMap routing, checked on a quiet weekend morning. Add a margin at rush hour and in heavy rain.
- Phuket Airport: about 9 km, a quarter of an hour on Route 4031
- Nai Yang: the next beach south, a short drive inside the same national park
- Patong: about 40 km, 50 minutes to an hour via Route 402 and the hill road from Kamala
- Surin and Bang Tao: on the way to Patong, roughly two thirds of that time
- Sarasin Bridge: at the northern tip, the road off the island towards Phang Nga and Khao Lak
TipFill up on the main road before you head to the beach. The side roads to the shore pass long unlit stretches with no station.
Parking by the sand without blocking the beach paths
Each turning off the main road ends at its own small access point, and that is where you leave the car: in the shade of the trees, nose out, clear of the path walkers use. Driving onto the sand is not an option. It is soft, rental cars are front-wheel drive, and parts of the shore are a protected nesting area.
Resort guests usually have hotel parking, which is the easiest choice for a whole day on the beach. For a visit from elsewhere, pick the access point before you set off and put that spot into navigation, not the beach as a whole, because the shore is long and the turnings are easy to miss.
What is close by: the park, the turtles and the bridge north
Mai Khao is part of Sirinat National Park together with Nai Yang, which is why the shore stays undeveloped. From roughly November to February, leatherback turtles may come ashore to nest, and park staff with the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation mark and guard the nests. A nest is something you may or may not see; keep lights off the sand at night and stay behind any marked area.
At the southern end, aircraft come in low over the beach on their approach to the runway, a sight many visitors drive up for. At the northern tip, Sarasin Bridge connects Phuket to the mainland, so Mai Khao is also the easiest starting point for a day in Khao Lak or Phang Nga. Check the agreement terms for driving off the island before you plan that day.
Renting a car for this drive
What a car costs for this trip depends on the class and on how long you keep it: see the price per day in Phuket, and the search gives the total for your dates. We deliver the car to your hotel or villa at any hour, and a refundable deposit is taken at handover, its size depending on the model. First-class commercial insurance is included, and every car we deliver is an automatic, since manual cars are rare in Phuket. Booking, payment and return are explained in how renting a car with Kolesio works. Car rental near the end of the drive: cars for rent in Mai Khao.

Common questions
How far is Mai Khao Beach from Phuket Airport by car?
About 9 km. On a clear road it is a quarter of an hour from the terminal on Route 4031, which makes Mai Khao the closest beach area to the airport.
How long is the drive from Mai Khao to Patong?
Plan 50 minutes to an hour for roughly 40 km off-peak, longer at rush hour and in heavy rain. The last part climbs over the hill from Kamala.
Is Mai Khao too remote without a car?
For a beach-only stay at a resort, no. For dinners out, shopping or trips south, yes: taxis have to come up from other areas, and a rental car parked at the hotel is simpler.
When do turtles nest at Mai Khao?
The leatherback nesting season runs roughly from November to February. Nests are guarded by Sirinat National Park staff; sightings are not guaranteed.
