Nai Thon Beach in Phuket by Car: Road, Parking and Best Time
Nai Thon is a quiet bay between two headlands on the north-west coast, 20 min by car from Bang Tao, and every way in climbs over a low pass and drops through tight bends to the sea. Parking is a single row along the road above the beach and is rarely a fight, but after rain the headland roads turn slippery and the drive needs daylight and a slower pace.

Short answer
Yes, Nai Thon is an easy beach to reach by car, and almost impossible to reach without one. The bay sits between two headlands, so the road approaches from the north and from the south by climbing over one of them and dropping down to the sea. Either way you meet a couple of tight bends with a drop on one side.
The pass and the lay-by
The road in crosses a low pass. At the top there is a lay-by with the whole bay in view, and it is the best short stop on the entire northern stretch. Pull in there, not on the bend: the pull-in is the only place on the climb where a stopped car is not in somebody's way.
Then the road drops into the bay and the beach is right beside it. Nai Thon is the smallest of the northern beaches, with a short strip of places to eat, and it stays quiet even at the height of the season.
What that means for the car
The main road north is wide and easy. The work is in the last few kilometres over the headland, where the bends are tight and the edge falls away on one side. People who live near Nai Thon drive compact automatics on good tyres rather than the biggest car they can get.
An automatic helps on the climb. You hold the car on the gradient with the brake, pull away without a clutch, and keep both eyes on the bend rather than on the gearstick. On the way down, drop to a low gear and let the engine do the braking.
Plan fuel before you turn off. There is no station at Nai Thon, and the nearest ones sit at Thalang or out on the main highway, a hill road there and back. Our map of petrol stations shows where to fill up on the way.
If you are staying at Nai Thon, it is often simpler to collect the car at the airport, which is closer to the bay than most rental offices. We can have it waiting at arrivals or at your hotel: automatic, first-class commercial insurance, refundable deposit, the total for your dates fixed in chat. Send the dates on WhatsApp or through the booking form.
Where to park at Nai Thon
Cars park along the road above the beach, in a single row. The road is narrow and passing oncoming traffic is tight, so one car with a wheel left in the lane stops all movement in the bay. Tuck in fully, fold the mirror if the gap is close, and check the lane behind you before opening the door.
Parking here is rarely the fight it is in the busier bays. The row is modest, but so is the crowd, and on most days you will find a space without circling. Park so you can drive out forwards: reversing onto this road into a car coming round the bend is the one awkward moment of the day.
- Park fully off the lane — one wheel in the road blocks the whole bay
- Face the way you will leave — pulling out forwards is safer than reversing on a bend
- Use the lay-by at the top for photos — stopping on the climb itself is dangerous
- Keep off the sand — a rental car has no all-wheel drive and digs in within seconds
- Take valuables with you — a quiet road means nobody is watching the car
When to go
Morning suits the northern beaches best. The light is better, the heat has not built, and the roads over the headlands are calm. The bends into Nai Thon are also better met in daylight than on the drive home after dark.
Rain is the one thing that changes the plan. After a downpour the headland roads turn slippery, and a tight bend with a drop on one side is no place to test the tyres. Wait for the road to dry, or leave Nai Thon for another day.
In the wet season the open water brings serious swell, and the red flags mean exactly what they say. There are fewer people here to notice if something goes wrong, so on rough days look at the sea and stay out of it.
Nai Thon and its neighbours
Nai Thon pairs naturally with the beaches around it. Nai Yang and the airport lie north over the headland, Bang Tao and Laguna south past the viewpoint, and each hop takes 15 to 20 minutes. The coastal way through Nai Thon is prettier and slower than the main road, and its bends are better driven in daylight.
A workable day is one beach in the morning, lunch, then a second in the afternoon. Coming from the south, the turnings to the sea are on your left as you head north, which saves you crossing fast oncoming traffic on the main road.
ImportantNever drive onto the sand. The last metres to the water at the northern beaches turn loose after a few cars, rental cars have no all-wheel drive, and a recovery truck is neither an insured event nor a quick fix: the tow is paid separately.
Renting a car for this drive
No car yet for this trip? It can be delivered to your hotel or villa anywhere on the island, and delivery is counted separately from the daily rental rate. At handover you leave a refundable deposit that depends on the model, and first-class commercial insurance covers the drivers named in the contract. Every car we deliver is an automatic, and renting a manual car in Phuket is rarely an option. Prices by model and the rest of the terms: how car rental with us works. For this drive, see cars for rent in Nai Thon.
Also useful before you book: a car for two weeks.

Common questions
Can you drive to Nai Thon Beach?
Yes. The bay sits between two headlands, and the road comes in from the north or the south over a low pass with a couple of tight bends. Without a car Nai Thon is close to impossible to reach.
Is there parking at Nai Thon Beach?
Yes, in a single row along the road above the beach. It is modest but rarely full, because the bay stays quiet. Park fully off the narrow lane and face the way you will leave.
Is the road to Nai Thon difficult?
Not in the dry. It is a short hill road with tight bends and a drop on one side. After rain it turns slippery, so slow down or wait for it to dry before driving over the headland.
Where is the nearest petrol station to Nai Thon?
At Thalang or on the main highway, since there is none in the bay itself. Fill the tank before you turn off towards the coast, because going back for fuel means a hill road there and back.
What is the best time to visit Nai Thon by car?
In the morning, when the light is good and the headland roads are quiet. Avoid the drive right after heavy rain, and in the wet season check the flags before swimming.
