Why a maxi-scooter on the island

The Forza solves the main problem of long days on a bike, which is tiredness. A proper seat, a screen that takes the wind off, a relaxed riding position and suspension that deals with the surface mean that three hours of riding leaves you able to enjoy where you have arrived.

It also removes the small daily irritations. There is room under the seat for two helmets, a bag of shopping or a laptop; the lights are good enough for riding after dark; and the brakes are strong enough that traffic on the main highway is not something to be endured.

For anyone crossing the island regularly — north to south, over the passes, out to the airport — this is the class that makes those journeys pleasant. On a small scooter the same trips are perfectly possible and considerably less enjoyable.

Fuel range is the quiet advantage nobody mentions. A larger tank and a relaxed engine mean you are not looking for a fuel station every second day, which matters most in the parts of the island where the stations thin out — the north beyond Mai Khao and the road towards the bridge. On a small scooter that same trip involves planning; on this one it does not.

What it means for the ride

A large scooter needs more room to manoeuvre. A U-turn in a narrow lane takes a proper technique rather than a flick of the bars, and reversing it out of a parking space on a slope is a physical job. Choose parking you can ride out of forwards and the whole thing gets easier.

The weight also changes low-speed balance, which matters most in exactly the places holiday accidents happen: car parks, driveways, junctions with gravel. Keep your speed up slightly through slow turns rather than crawling, and look where you want to go rather than at the front wheel.

Where the weight helps is everywhere else. In wind, in the wash from a passing lorry, on a bumpy coastal road and at highway speed, a heavier machine simply feels planted. That is the trade, and for most riders it is a good one.

Who this class does not suit

Anyone sitting on two wheels for the first time. The weight and the size forgive less than a small scooter does, and the first hour of riding on the left in unfamiliar traffic is not the moment to also be learning to handle a large machine.

It also does not suit a stay built around very short local trips. If your riding is the beach at the end of the road and a supermarket, a small scooter parks more easily, costs less to run and is simpler to thread through a crowded lane.

And it is a poor choice where the last part of your route is an unsurfaced or badly broken approach. The Forza is a road machine, and a rutted lane to a villa is where its size and modest clearance are both working against you.

Parking a larger scooter

It goes in the same marked two-wheeler bays as anything else, but it needs more of one. In a tightly packed row at a market, a big scooter is awkward to extract when the bikes either side have been squeezed in, so take the end of a row where you can.

Pay attention to the surface. A side stand on hot, soft tarmac sinks, and a heavy machine that starts to lean carries on going. Firm level ground, front wheel turned towards the stand, and a check that the bike is properly settled before you walk away.

In the wet season, do not park it on a slope facing downhill on wet ground. Getting a heavy scooter back up a slippery incline from a standstill is genuinely difficult, and it is easily avoided by thinking for two seconds when you arrive.

Forza or an ordinary scooter

The answer comes down to how far you ride each day. Up to a few kilometres, a small scooter wins on every practical measure: easier to park, cheaper, lighter in traffic and simpler to leave anywhere. Nothing about a bigger machine improves a short hop to the beach.

Once your daily routes cross the island, include the passes, or involve two people plus luggage, the balance flips completely. The comfort, the storage, the lights and the stability turn a tiring day into an easy one, and the extra cost stops being the main consideration.

The second question is your own experience. If you ride regularly at home, the Forza will feel natural immediately.
