Turn by turn from the terminal to Surin
Leaving the airport you join Route 4031 and follow it south for about 9 km. It is wide and straight, which gives you time to settle into driving on the left before anything gets busy.
Route 4031 meets Route 402, the island's main north–south road. You stay on 402 only briefly, then turn right onto Route 4030 towards Cherng Talay and the west coast. This is the one junction worth reading ahead for: put Surin Beach into navigation before you leave the car park, and the turn comes up clearly.
Route 4030 runs through Cherng Talay, past the shops and the turn for Bang Tao, and drops down towards the sea. Surin Beach sits at the end of this road, between Bang Tao to the north and Kamala to the south.
What you pass on the way: fuel, cash and a supermarket stop
The stretch through Cherng Talay is the practical place to stop on arrival. Petrol stations and convenience stores line the road, and it is easier to pick up water, snacks and breakfast for the next morning here than after you have reached a villa up a hill.
If you land late, do this stop on the main road where it is lit and open, rather than looking for a shop in Surin itself.
Collect at arrivals or have the car brought to the villa
Collecting at arrivals suits most people: you drive straight to the accommodation and the car is already there for the first evening. We need your flight number, and the handover follows the actual landing time.
Delivery to the villa the next morning suits a night arrival, a long flight or a family that would rather not drive tired. A transfer takes you to Surin, and the car arrives at the door at a time you choose. Either way, the documents are the same: passport, national licence and an International Driving Permit.
Steep villa driveways above Surin
Many Surin villas sit on the slopes above the beach, and the last few hundred metres are often narrow and steep. An automatic makes this simple: hold the car on the brake, not on a clutch, and use the low gear on the way down.
Size matters more here than on the main road. A compact car or small SUV fits a tight driveway turn better than a long seven-seater, so tell us how many people and suitcases are coming and we match the car to the drive.
TipAsk the villa for a pin of the gate, not just the street. Navigation often ends at the bottom of the hill.
Planning the drive north for a departure from Surin
Going back is the same three roads in reverse: Route 4030 up through Cherng Talay, a short stretch of Route 402 north, then Route 4031 to the terminal. Half an hour covers it on a clear road, but leave room for the morning traffic on 402 and for a shower that slows everyone down at once.
The car goes back with the same fuel level it came with; the stations on Route 4030 and on the main road are the easy places to top up. Returning at the airport and handing over at the departures kerb are both arranged in chat, so you do not need a taxi for the last morning.
Renting a car for this drive
What a car costs for this trip depends on the class and on how long you keep it: see the price per day in Phuket, and the search gives the total for your dates. We deliver the car to your hotel or villa at any hour, and a refundable deposit is taken at handover, its size depending on the model. First-class commercial insurance is included, and every car we deliver is an automatic, since manual cars are rare in Phuket. Booking, payment and return are explained in how renting a car with Kolesio works. Starting from Phuket Airport? See car rental at Phuket Airport.
