Patong to Kata by Car
Patong to Kata is two short climbs: about 15 min on the coast road over the pass to Karon, then 5 min over the hill into Kata. In the morning behind the tour buses, or in a downpour, both climbs slow to a crawl, and the real delay is often finding a space in Kata rather than the drive.

How long it takes and which road
Leaving Patong for Kata you drive south out of the hollow the town sits in. The coast road climbs straight away, crosses the pass and drops you into Karon about 15 min after you set off. From Karon it is one more hill, 5 min over the top, and you roll down into Kata. There is no flat alternative on this side of the island, so every trip south starts with a climb.
Where the traffic stops
The pass out of Patong is shorter and steeper than the road north, and every tour bus heading south uses it. In the morning you often crawl behind them all the way up to the viewpoint, with no safe place to overtake. Rain changes the picture again: the bends are tight and blind, the lanes narrow, and everyone slows down together.
The pass itself takes only a few minutes to cross. For the detail of the bends and the descent, read our page on the Patong to Karon pass; the second climb is covered in the Karon to Kata road.
What that means for the car
Take an automatic. Both climbs have spots where you stop behind a bus on the slope and pull away again, and a clutch makes that harder than it needs to be. On the way down, shift to L or B so the engine holds the car; our notes on brakes on hill descents explain why the pads fade if you ride them.
Size matters more at the Kata end than on the road. The streets there are narrow, with scooters parked on both sides, and a compact slips through where a wide SUV has to stop and wait. Parking cameras or sensors earn their keep here. An economy car is enough for two people going to the beach; a family with a stroller will want a little more boot but should still think small.
Tyre shops and car washes line the road from Kata to Karon, so a slow puncture or a sandy interior is easy to sort out on the way home.
If you are staying in Patong or Kata, we deliver the car to your hotel, villa or apartment at any hour: automatic, first-class commercial insurance, refundable deposit, the total for your dates fixed in chat. Send the dates on WhatsApp or through the booking form; the pages on car rental in Patong and car rental in Kata show how each district works.
The pass and the hill, step by step
Both climbs are short, and most of the risk sits in a handful of habits. Coaches take almost all of their lane in the bends, so the space you think you have is not there.
At the top of the Patong pass there is a viewpoint over Patong bay, and another platform above Karon bay halfway up the hill to Kata. Cars and scooters pull in and out of both, and rejoining the traffic is the moment that needs the most care.
- Drop to low gear before the descent — the drop is as steep as the climb and the pads overheat
- Stay behind a bus in a bend — it needs most of the road and you cannot see what is coming
- Signal early before pulling into a viewpoint — the car behind is often close
- Wait for a long gap to rejoin — the bends are blind and traffic arrives fast
- Slow down at the bottom of the Kata descent — the corner there is hidden behind greenery
Where to park in Kata
Free spaces by Kata beach are few, and in high season they are taken from early morning. Most of the parking is in the bays along the street running inland from the beach and in the big hotel car parks. The plan that works is to park once and walk, rather than circle for a space closer to the sand.
Kata Noi is tighter still: a small bay and a single road lined with hotel guests' cars. Arrive early in the morning or after four. If it is full, drive back over the headland and park in Kata instead of trying your luck on the verge.
ImportantBack in Patong, a red and white kerb means no stopping at all. The tow truck works in the evenings and clears the seafront, and getting the car back costs a fine plus the time spent collecting it.
The way back from Kata to Patong
Kata to Patong is the same road in reverse: the hill to Karon, then the pass north. After dark the pass has tight bends with no views to help you judge them, so keep the low gear on the drop into Patong and give the headlights of oncoming coaches room.
Arriving in Patong in the evening
From eight in the evening Bangla Road is closed to traffic and the navigation sends you around it, so add fifteen minutes to any trip after eight. If it has just poured, the low streets can fill to the kerb; do not drive through. Petrol stations sit only on the exits, on the road to Kathu and at the foot of the pass, so fill up before you come down into town.
For parking, read the kerb. Yellow and white allows a brief stop to drop someone off; a plain kerb is parking. Beach spaces are paid and gone by lunchtime in high season. The calmest option is the roof of the Jungceylon shopping centre, where there are always spaces and shade, with Bangla Road ten minutes away on foot. More on where to park in Patong, including the free side streets above Rat-U-Thit, is on a separate page.
Stopping in Karon on the way
Karon sits between the two climbs, so a stop there costs nothing in distance. If you want a quieter beach than Kata or a base for the next day, the page on car rental in Karon covers how that district works. If you are staying on the hills above Patong, SUV rental in Patong explains when a higher car makes both passes easier.
Renting a car for this drive
What a car costs for this trip depends on the class and on how long you keep it: see the price per day in Phuket, and the search gives the total for your dates. We deliver the car to your hotel or villa at any hour, and a refundable deposit is taken at handover, its size depending on the model. First-class commercial insurance is included, and every car we deliver is an automatic, since manual cars are rare in Phuket. Booking, payment and return are explained in how renting a car with Kolesio works. Starting from Patong? See car rental in Patong. Car rental near the end of the drive: cars for rent in Kata.

Common questions
How long is the drive from Patong to Kata?
Two short stages: about 15 min from Patong to Karon on the coast road over the pass, then 5 min over the hill to Kata. Add time in the morning behind tour buses, in heavy rain, and for finding a space in Kata.
Is the road from Patong to Kata steep?
Yes, in two places. The pass out of Patong is short and steep with tight blind bends, and the hill between Karon and Kata has a long descent. Use low gear going down and do not overtake buses in the bends.
Where can I park at Kata Beach?
Along the street running inland from the beach and in the big hotel car parks. Free spaces right by the beach go early in high season. At Kata Noi arrive early morning or after four, and if it is full, go back over the headland.
Is it better to drive or take a taxi from Patong to Kata in the evening?
Driving works if you are comfortable on a dark pass with tight bends. Coming back into Patong after eight, Bangla Road is closed and detours add about fifteen minutes. If you plan to drink, take a taxi and leave the car parked.
Can I stop at the viewpoint on the way?
Yes. There is a viewpoint over Patong bay at the top of the pass and a platform above Karon bay on the hill to Kata. Signal early, and when you pull back out, wait for a long gap because the bends are blind.
