Phuket to Koh Samui by Car and Ferry

What the journey consists of

Three parts. First, off Phuket and across the isthmus to the eastern side of the peninsula, which is straightforward highway driving. Second, the pier at Donsak with its queue, ticketing and loading. Third, the crossing itself and then the drive to wherever you are staying on Samui.

How much time to allow

More than the sum of the parts. The driving is predictable; the pier is not. Ferries run to a timetable, vehicle space is finite, and missing a sailing means waiting for the next one. Arrive at the pier well before your sailing rather than exactly on time.

Treat this as a full travel day in each direction. It is not a day trip and nobody should attempt it as one.

Build in time at the far end too. Arriving on Samui means a queue to disembark and then a drive on unfamiliar roads, often at the end of a long day. Booking somewhere to stay within easy reach of the pier for the first night takes the pressure out of the whole trip.

What it means for the car

The driving part is easy: sealed highway, no gradients worth naming, and a car park at the end. The unusual part is the boat.

Sea salt

A vehicle deck is a salty, wet environment, and salt spray sits on the paint and the underside for the whole crossing. It does no harm on a single trip, but rinse the car afterwards rather than leaving it, especially if you are on a longer rental.

The handbrake on the ferry

On the vehicle deck, leave the car in park with the handbrake firmly on, and follow the crew's instructions about which gear and whether to leave it unlocked. They do this hundreds of times a week; do exactly what they say and do not improvise.

Parking at the pier and on Samui

If you decide to leave the car on the mainland and cross as a foot passenger, there is long-stay parking at the pier. That is a legitimate option and it is cheaper than taking a vehicle across, though it leaves you without wheels at the other end.

On Samui itself

Samui is a ring road island: one main road round the outside with turnings inland and down to the beaches. Having your own car there is genuinely useful, because the beaches and the towns are spread right around the ring.

Parking on Samui is much easier than on Phuket. There is space at most beaches and restaurants, kerb colours mean the same thing, and only the busiest spots near Chaweng get difficult in the evening.

• Consider leaving the car at the pier if you will not need it on Samui

When this trip does not make sense

For a short holiday, it usually does not. A day of travel in each direction out of a week is a lot, and flying between the two islands is quicker and often simpler.

The other reason it fails is administrative: not every rental agreement allows the car to be taken on a ferry to another island. That is not a detail to discover at the pier with a ticket in your hand.

Who it does suit

People relocating rather than holidaying. Anyone travelling with a lot of belongings. Groups splitting a long drive between two drivers. And people for whom the journey down the coast, with stops, is part of the point rather than an obstacle.

Cars that suit this

Comfort over compactness. This is four hours of highway plus a ferry, and a quiet cabin with strong air conditioning matters far more than a small turning circle.

A second driver

Name one at handover. Long days like this are exactly when swapping matters, and an unnamed driver is an uncovered driver.
