One-Way Car Rental from Phuket: What Is Possible
On Phuket itself a one-way rental is routine with us: we deliver the car to one address, for example airport arrivals, and take it back at another, such as your hotel or the airport on your last day, all arranged in chat. Leaving the car in another province, in Krabi or Bangkok, is not something to assume from a booking form; ask in chat before you book and we tell you what can be arranged for your dates. When a mainland drop-off is not possible, the working plan is a round trip or a return at Phuket Airport before you fly on.

Can I pick up in one place and return in another?
On the island, yes, and many visitors do it without ever calling it one-way. The car meets you at arrivals, you drive to the hotel, and two weeks later you hand it back at the terminal before check-in. Or the reverse: delivery to a villa in Rawai, return at the airport. Both points are agreed in chat together with the dates.
What is counted separately is the delivery to your point, and how the airport return is counted for your booking is settled in the same conversation as the total. No surprises at the car.
Krabi, Bangkok, Samui?
Here we do not promise from a web page. A drop-off in another province is a question for chat before you book: tell us where and when the trip ends, and we answer for your dates. What we will not do is let you find out at the end of a three-hour drive.
Which one-way plans on the island work well?
Arrivals to hotel is the classic. Send the flight number and arrival time when you book and the car waits at the terminal car park, night flights included; the handover inspection happens there, and you drive off with the luggage already in the boot.
Hotel to airport closes the loop. The drop-off is arranged against your flight, and the same walk-round as at the start (body, tyres, air conditioning, fuel) happens at the terminal. The only enemy is the clock: leave the hotel earlier than you would for a taxi, because the inspection and a fuel stop both need minutes.
A mid-stay move works too. Two nights in Patong, a week in Nai Harn? The car moves with you, and nobody needs to collect or swap it, since the rental follows the driver rather than the address.
What that means for the car
If the trip is a round one instead, pick the car for the longest day, not the average one. Krabi is about 160 km and roughly three hours on good sealed road; Khao Lak about 90 km and an hour and a half. For those, a crossover or a minivan with strong air conditioning is kinder than the smallest hatchback.
Take petrol for anything off the island. Beyond the Sarasin bridge the charging network thins out, and an electric car's range plan stops working. Fill up the evening before, because the queue before the bridge grows after nine.
Every mainland trip is agreed in writing first. Without that, the insurance does not apply once you are off the island, however short the detour.
Tell us the dates, the route and where the rental should start and end, and we arrange it: automatic, first-class commercial insurance, refundable deposit of 5,000–30,000 ฿, depending on the model, delivery to arrivals, a hotel, villa or apartment at any hour, the total fixed in chat. Send the dates in the chat or through the booking form.
Step by step
One-way plans fail on the last day, so build the plan backwards from it.
- Name both points when you book — delivery address and return address go into the same chat
- Ask about any mainland drop-off before booking — and wait for the answer
- Agree any trip off the island in writing — without it the insurance stops at the bridge
- Send the flight time for an airport return — the walk-round has to fit before check-in
- Plan a fuel stop before the return — the car comes back at the level you received
- Keep the rental agreement until the deposit is back — it holds the handover record
ImportantDo not leave the car somewhere we have not agreed, even with the keys handed to a hotel desk. The rental ends only with the return inspection, and until then the car, the fuel and any fines stay on your agreement.
Phuket to Bangkok one way: does it make sense?
Honestly, rarely by rental car. Phuket to Bangkok is roughly 850 km, twelve to thirteen hours of driving before stops, and the sensible version splits it with a night in Chumphon or Hua Hin. For most visitors moving on to Bangkok, the easier plan is the car on the island, a return at Phuket Airport, and a flight. Phuket to Bangkok by car describes the drive for those who want it anyway.
What about Krabi and Khao Lak?
These work well as round trips. Our rule is a night away once the drive one way passes about two hours, so Khao Lak fits a long day, while Krabi is better with an overnight stop and a morning drive back. The page can I drive to Krabi or Khao Lak covers what to arrange before you cross the bridge.
If you are heading on by ferry to Samui, the car goes with you on the boat from Donsak; Phuket to Samui by car and ferry explains that route and the timing either side of the crossing.

Common questions
Can I do a one-way car rental from Phuket to Krabi?
Ask in chat before you book. A drop-off in another province is answered for your specific dates, and if it cannot be arranged, a round trip with a night in Krabi is the usual plan.
Can I pick up at Phuket Airport and return at my hotel?
Yes. Both points are agreed in chat when you book, and the delivery to your point is counted separately from the rental.
Can I return the car at Phuket Airport before my flight?
Yes, the return is set against your flight time. Allow time for the walk-round inspection before check-in and a fuel stop on the way.
Is a one-way rental from Phuket to Bangkok worth it?
Rarely. It is about 850 km and twelve to thirteen hours of driving, so most people return the car at Phuket Airport and fly.
Do I need permission to drive the car off Phuket?
Yes, in writing before the trip. Without it the insurance does not apply once you are off the island.
What if my plans change during the rental?
Message us in chat as soon as you know. The return point and time can be rearranged far more easily with notice than on the day.
Can I have a rental car delivered to my hotel and return it at the airport?
Yes. Delivery to your hotel and the return at Phuket Airport are both agreed in chat when you book. The return is set against your flight time, with the same walk-round inspection as at handover, and the delivery to your point is counted separately from the rental.
Do I need a credit card for a one-way car rental in Phuket?
No. A one-way rental needs the same as any other: a passport, a national licence and an International Driving Permit. The refundable deposit can be paid in cash when the car is handed over, and cashless options are agreed in chat before delivery.
Can I return the rental car in Khao Lak or Krabi?
Yes. Khao Lak and Krabi are among the points where the car is delivered and returned, so a trip can end there instead of back on Phuket. The cost of the return is quoted in chat for your address and dates.
