Which way to drive
The route has four parts. From Thalang town, take Highway 402, Thep Kasattri Road, south for about 12 km; from the Heroines Monument it is only about 4 km. North of Phuket Town, turn onto the bypass, Chalermprakiat Road, and follow it for about 7 km.
The bypass dips through the underpass at the Darasamut junction, and the road continues south as Chao Fa West Road for about 9 km. For the last 1.5 km it is Wiset Road, which brings you to the Chalong five-way junction with its clock tower and underpass.
How long it takes
An OpenStreetMap route planner gives about 37 minutes from Thalang town to the Chalong roundabout and about 27 minutes from the Heroines Monument, in clear traffic, driving straight through. Treat those as the best case: at rush hour or in a heavy downpour the drive takes longer.
Speed cameras stand on the straight sections of this route, and the minutes gained by speeding on a 30 km drive are few.
What that means for the car
There is no pass on this drive: wide highway, the bypass and a straight road south. Any car class handles it, and every Kolesio car is automatic, which helps in the stop-start traffic at the junctions near town.
If the day continues to the Big Buddha, the road up the hill starts in Chalong; that climb, not the drive from Thalang, is the part that asks something of the car.
Stops on the way and parking in Chalong
Chao Fa West Road passes Wat Chalong a few kilometres before the roundabout. You drive through the temple gate onto its own yard; by midday tour coaches fill it, so arrive early and leave space for them to turn.
Chalong Pier is a few minutes down one straight road from the roundabout. In the early morning, when the boats leave, the last few hundred metres move at walking pace and cars park along the edges near the water.
Going back north
The return is the same road in reverse: Wiset Road and Chao Fa West Road north, the bypass round Phuket Town and Highway 402 to Thalang. Get into the correct lane before the underpasses, because a missed exit on a divided road usually means driving on to the next U-turn gap.
