How to Get to Phi Phi from Phuket by Car and Ferry
To get to Phi Phi from Patong, Karon or any Phuket beach, you drive to the pier printed on your boat ticket, leave the car in the pier parking for the day and cross by passenger boat, because no car ferry goes to Phi Phi and the island has no roads for cars. Many Phi Phi day tours leave from Chalong, the main jetty of the south, where the approach runs through a busy roundabout. The plan only breaks on timing: boats leave early on their schedule, so the drive is planned the evening before.

Ask on WhatsApp: How to Get to Phi Phi from Phuket by Car and Ferry
Can I take a rental car to Phi Phi?
No, and you would not want to. Phi Phi is reached only by passenger boat, and there are no roads on the island for a car to use. What the car does is the part before the boat: it gets you to the pier at your own time, with the bags, and waits there until the evening.
Which pier? Look at the ticket. Many Phi Phi day tours leave from Chalong, the busiest jetty in the south and the start for most boats to the southern islands; the piers of Phuket page describes it and the others. If your ticket names a different pier, the drive is a different one, so check before you plan the morning.
Patong or Karon to the pier
From Patong the southern route starts with 15 min over the pass to Karon; from Karon you continue towards the Chalong roundabout for the south pier, or cut across the island towards Phuket Town for Rassada. The other road out of Patong goes east through Kathu and down past town, which is often the easier way to Rassada. We have not timed every beach to every pier, so check the route in a map app the evening before, at the hour you plan to leave, and trust that figure more than a midday one.
Koh Lanta is the other way round: there the car itself crosses on the ferry, and how that is agreed is explained in taking a rental car to Koh Lanta or Koh Yao.
What that means for the car
Any car does the pier run, and the choice matters more for what happens around it. A family with beach bags, snorkels and a cool box wants a boot that swallows everything; a couple travelling light is fine in an economy car that parks anywhere.
The car will stand in sun and salt air for hours. Look for shade when you park, and leave nothing on the seats. A scorching cabin is a poor welcome after a day at sea, so crack the doors for a minute before you get in.
Coming back, give yourself a pause. Sit in the shade and drink water before you drive, especially if the hill to the west coast lies ahead; a day on a boat is more tiring than it feels on the deck.
Tell us the date of the boat trip and where you stay, and we bring the car the day before, so the morning starts with the keys already in hand: automatic, first-class commercial insurance, refundable deposit of 5,000–30,000 ฿, depending on the model, delivered to your hotel, villa or apartment at any hour, total fixed in chat. Send the dates in the chat or through the booking form.
Step by step
Count backwards from boarding, not forwards from breakfast.
- Read the pier on the ticket the day before — Rassada and Chalong are different drives
- Refuel the evening before — not every station opens early
- Check the drive in a map app at the hour you will leave — the midday figure lies
- Subtract a margin for parking and the walk to the jetty — boats do not wait
- Park in shade and leave nothing visible — the car stands all day
- Rest before driving back — heat and sea air make the first minutes slow
ImportantThe last stretch to a morning pier moves at walking pace behind tour minibuses, and the final metres are a working area with boats unloading and people carrying boxes across the road. Drive it slowly and leave the margin for it in your timing, or you watch the boat leave from the car park.
Chalong or another pier: how do the drives differ?
Chalong is the busier start. The final section fills with the early-morning column of tour minibuses, so on a Chalong day we would take the car the evening before and leave earlier than feels necessary. Patong to Chalong Pier by car shows both roads from the west coast.
If your ticket names Rassada instead, the morning is easier. The road on the east side of the island, near Phuket Town, is flat and fast, and the approach is calmer than the roundabout traffic at Chalong. Rassada Pier by car covers the parking and the last turn in detail.
Is a car worth it just for the pier?
Often, yes, if the boat is one day of a longer stay. The car gets you to the jetty at your time instead of the tour pickup's, and afterwards it takes you back without waiting for a ride at the busiest hour. At rush hour the road through Phuket Town is sometimes faster than the direct one, so glance at the map before leaving the car park. The piers of Phuket page lists the other jetties and their roads.
Tour packages often include a hotel pickup, and that works for a single outing. The car wins when the boat day sits inside a week of other plans: you can leave for the pier earlier than the minibus would, stop for breakfast on the way, and drive straight to dinner in town on the way back instead of being dropped at the hotel first.

Common questions
Can I drive to Phi Phi from Phuket?
No. Phi Phi is reached only by passenger boat, so you drive to the pier, leave the car in the parking and take the boat.
Which pier do boats to Phi Phi leave from?
The one printed on your ticket. Many Phi Phi day tours leave from Chalong, the main jetty in the south; if the ticket names another pier, plan the drive to that one.
How do I get from Patong to the Phi Phi boat?
Drive to the pier on your ticket: south via Karon for Chalong, or east through Kathu and past Phuket Town for Rassada. Check the drive in a map app the evening before.
Can I leave the rental car at the pier all day?
Yes, the car waits in the pier parking until you come back. Park in shade and leave nothing on the seats.
How early should I leave for a morning boat?
Count backwards from boarding: parking and the walk to the jetty, the drive, then the morning build-up. The last stretch to a busy pier can move at walking pace.
Is it safe to drive back after a day on the boat?
Yes, after a short rest. Sit in the shade with water for a few minutes first, especially if a hill road lies between the pier and your hotel.
