Can I Drive in Phuket with a South African Licence?

You can drive a rental car in Phuket on a South African licence card if an International Driving Permit from the AA of South Africa and your passport come with it. South Africa is not in ASEAN, so the card by itself does not cover driving in Thailand, and the permit has to be issued at home before you travel. The road will feel familiar, because Thailand drives on the left like South Africa does.

Is a South African licence enough in Thailand?

Not by itself. Thailand accepts licences from ASEAN countries as they are, and asks everyone else for an International Driving Permit on top. So the credit-card licence, the permit and the passport travel as one set.

Where does the permit come from? The AA of South Africa, before you fly. There is no office on Phuket that can issue one, and a forgotten IDP cannot be fixed after landing, however long the stay.

Check the card date

South African licence cards carry their own expiry date, separate from the licence itself. We look at the card at handover, and so does an officer at a checkpoint. If it runs out during your trip, renew it before you leave.

What that means for the rental

The age floor is 21, with a year of driving behind you; for premium cars and large SUVs it rises to 23. Everyone who will drive goes on the agreement with their own card, IDP and passport, because a driver who is not listed has no insurance.

Every car we deliver is an automatic. With the wheel on the right and traffic on the left, nothing about the controls will surprise you, which leaves all your attention for the traffic around the car.

Landing late from Johannesburg? The car can wait at arrivals, or come to your hotel or villa the next morning. First-class commercial insurance is included, a refundable deposit of 5,000–30,000 ฿, depending on the model, is held and one total for your dates is settled in chat before the flight. Message us the dates and who will drive, or use the booking form.

ImportantThe IDP is valid only next to the South African card. If the card stays at home or has expired, the car cannot be driven legally in Thailand and the rental insurance does not cover you.

What will a South African driver notice first?

Scooters. Lots of them, passing on both sides, filtering to the front at every light and treating the road edge as a lane. The habit that keeps you out of trouble is checking both mirrors before every turn.

Speeds are low. Towns cap you at 80 km/h. Open roads allow 90, and only divided roads with two lanes each way go to 100; any posted sign lower than that is the one that counts. On Phuket's hills you will rarely reach 60.

On alcohol, Thai law sets 50 mg% (20 mg% for temporary licence holders), yet a single drink already puts you outside the rental cover. Leave the car parked on a night out and take a taxi back.

Rain is the other thing. A tropical downpour arrives in minutes, and in the first of them oil and rubber rise off the tarmac, so braking distances grow on the flattest road. Slow down, double the gap, and on a flooded stretch turn back instead of pushing through. Hill descents deserve the low position on the gear selector rather than a foot resting on the brake the whole way down.

  • Get the IDP from the AA before the trip — it is not issued in Thailand
  • Check the card's expiry date — it must be valid for the whole stay
  • Name every driver on the agreement — an unlisted driver is uninsured
  • Check both mirrors before turning — scooters fill every gap
  • Keep card, IDP and agreement in the glovebox — checkpoints ask for all three

Driving around the south of Phuket

Chalong is the junction the whole south uses. Every trip across the southern end of the island passes its roundabout, the island boats leave from its pier, and the road up to the Big Buddha starts here. From Chalong the airport road runs north without hill sections, the easiest long drive on the island.

Rawai is a residential area rather than a beach resort: seafood restaurants on the water, boats at the pier, ordinary streets behind. Its airport run avoids the west coast entirely by taking the eastern road through Chalong.

Nai Harn is the far south, a bay with a lagoon behind the sand and hills all around, with Promthep Cape minutes away. Both roads out of the bay climb, and the northern one towards Kata winds. It is the longest airport run of any district, so leave plenty of time on departure day.

What happens at a police check?

Expect to hand over the card and the permit first and the rental agreement after, as proof the car is legitimately yours for the week. Keep all three together and the stop is quick. Without the permit there is nothing to sort out at the roadside; the fix only exists at home, before the flight.

Common questions

Can I drive in Thailand with a South African licence?

Yes, with an International Driving Permit from the AA of South Africa and your passport alongside the card. The card alone is not enough.

Where do South Africans get an International Driving Permit?

From the AA of South Africa, before the trip. It is issued only in the country that issued your licence, so Thailand cannot provide one.

Do they drive on the left in Phuket?

Yes, as in South Africa, with the steering wheel on the right. The layout will feel familiar from the first minute.

My licence card expires during the trip. Is that a problem?

Yes. The card has to be valid for the whole stay, since the permit only works next to a valid licence. Renew it before you fly.

How far is Nai Harn from the airport?

It is the longest airport run on the island, at the very southern tip. Allow plenty of time on departure day, especially in the evening.

What deposit do you hold on a rental car?

A refundable deposit of 5,000–30,000 ฿, depending on the model. It is held at handover and returned when the car comes back.
