Can I Drive in Phuket with a Canadian Licence?
Yes. A provincial Canadian licence is fine for renting and driving a car in Phuket, as long as a CAA-issued International Driving Permit and your passport come with it. Canada isn't in ASEAN, so the card alone won't do, and once you've landed there's no way to get the permit. What takes getting used to is the road itself (traffic keeps left, the wheel is on the right).

Do Canadians need an International Driving Permit in Thailand?
You do. ASEAN licences are accepted in Thailand as they are; every other licence needs the permit next to it. For Canadians that means a trip to CAA, or an application through the club, before you leave home.
Think of the IDP as a translation. It doesn't stand in for the provincial card, it explains it. So the card, the permit and the passport travel together, and if one of the three is missing, the other two stop helping.
Licences in French
Quebec licences are printed in French. We get asked about this a lot. With the IDP it simply isn't an issue: the permit carries the same details in a format an officer here can read, which is the whole point of it.
What that means for renting a car
Every driver shows the same three papers at handover and goes on the agreement by name. Age 21 and one year of driving are the minimum, or 23 if you want a premium car or a large SUV. Someone at the wheel who is not on the agreement has no insurance, so add the second driver when you book.
Good news on the gearbox. Our cars are automatics, and so is most of what you drive at home, so the classic left-side problem of shifting with the wrong hand never comes up. One small trap: the indicator usually sits on the right stalk. Your first turn will probably start the wipers. Everybody's does.
After the connections from Vancouver or Toronto, someone meets you with the car at arrivals, or brings it to the hotel or villa later. First-class commercial insurance is built in, you leave a refundable deposit of 5,000–30,000 ฿, depending on the model, and the total is agreed in chat before departure. Send us your dates and driver names in the chat, or book on the form.
ImportantIf the Canadian licence card is not with you, the CAA permit is not valid on its own. Driving on it alone is not legal in Thailand, and the first-class commercial insurance on the rental no longer applies.
What changes when a Canadian drives in Phuket?
Everything is mirrored. You sit on the right, keep left, and look right first when you pull out. Roundabouts run clockwise and give priority to traffic already on them from the right. Most drivers need a day or two before it stops feeling odd, and the first mistakes are usually harmless ones like the wiper stalk.
There is no right turn on red here. Wait for the green, and watch for scooters, which overtake on both sides and gather at the front of every queue.
Speed limits run in three steps: 80 km/h in towns, 90 beyond them, 100 on four-lane divided roads, and a lower sign beats all of them. Thailand's legal limit is 50 mg% (20 on a temporary licence), but the rental cover is voided by any drinking whatsoever.
- Get the IDP from CAA before you fly — Thailand does not issue it
- Bring the physical provincial card — a digital copy is not checked
- Add every driver to the agreement — an unlisted driver voids the insurance
- Wait for green, never turn on red — there is no right-on-red rule here
- Keep licence, IDP and agreement in the car — a checkpoint asks for all three
How should I plan my first drive?
After a long flight from Canada, a rested morning is the right time, not the evening you land. The airport sits in the far north of the island, and the main road south through the middle of Phuket is wide, with traffic lights, a calmer start than the winding coast road above the beaches.
Before you set off, find the lights, wipers and air conditioning while the car is still parked. Hill roads between the bays are mostly unlit, so the first night drive is worth postponing until the left side feels natural.
What does a police check look like?
Police generally want the provincial card with the CAA permit first, then the contract proving you're an authorised driver of the car. Keep all three together in the glovebox and a stop takes a few minutes. A missing permit cannot be sorted at the roadside, so the only fix is doing it at CAA before the trip.
Winter drivers from Canada tend to handle one Phuket hazard well: a sudden downpour. The first minutes of rain lift oil and rubber off the tarmac and stopping distances grow, so slow down, double the gap and let the worst of the shower pass before a hill descent. At a flooded stretch, turn back rather than test the car.

Common questions
Can I drive in Thailand with an Ontario or BC licence?
Yes, with an International Driving Permit from CAA and your passport alongside it. Any provincial licence follows the same rule.
Where do Canadians get an International Driving Permit?
From CAA, before the trip. The permit is issued only in the country that issued your licence, so it cannot be obtained in Thailand.
Is a Quebec licence in French a problem?
Not with the IDP. The permit presents the licence details in a form officers here can read, which is its purpose.
Can I turn right on a red light in Phuket?
No. Wait for the green light. Because traffic keeps left, a right turn here crosses the oncoming lane.
How old must I be to rent a car in Phuket?
At least 21, with a year of driving. Premium cars and large SUVs need drivers aged 23 or older.
Is it hard for Canadians to drive on the left?
For a day or two, yes. The automatic gearbox helps, and a first drive on flat roads in daylight makes the switch much easier.
