Can I Drive in Phuket with a French Licence?
You can rent and drive a car in Phuket with a French licence as long as an International Driving Permit and your passport travel with it. France is outside ASEAN, so the permis alone does not let you drive in Thailand, and the IDP has to be requested in France before departure because it cannot be issued here. Where the answer stops working is the old folded paper licence left at home: the permit only counts next to the original.

Ask on WhatsApp: Can I Drive in Phuket with a French Licence?
Do French drivers need an International Driving Permit in Thailand?
They do. Thailand accepts licences from ASEAN countries by themselves, and France is not one of them, so a French permis needs the permit alongside it. Think of the IDP as a translation that only works when the original is in your pocket.
Is the old pink paper licence a problem? Not legally, as long as it is still valid in France. In practice it is harder for anyone here to read, which is one more reason the IDP matters: the permit is what a Thai officer can actually check line by line.
When to apply
Early. The permit is requested through the French authorities from home, and it takes its own time to arrive. A forgotten IDP cannot be fixed after landing, and we would rather hear about it before you book than at arrivals.
What that means for the car
Each driver needs three documents: permis, IDP, passport. Minimum age is 21 with a year behind the wheel, 23 for premium and big SUVs. A second driver is added to the agreement before the trip, not halfway through it, because someone at the wheel who is not listed has no insurance.
The cars are automatics. For a French driver that matters more than it sounds, since the left hand is freed from the gear lever at the exact moment the brain is busy with the left side of the road. The stalks are often mirrored, so your first indicator will probably be the wipers.
The car can be handed over at the airport exit or brought to where you stay, even for a 2 a.m. arrival. First-class commercial insurance is included, the deposit (5,000–30,000 ฿, depending on the model) is returned with the car, and we fix one price for the dates in chat. Tell us in the chat when you arrive and who will drive, or go through the booking form.
Step by step, from Paris to the driver's seat
Most of the work happens in France. What is left on arrival takes a few minutes at the car.
- Request the IDP in France well before the flight — it is only issued at home
- Check the permis is valid for the whole stay — the permit follows the licence
- Pack the original card or paper licence — a copy or a photo is not enough
- Send the drivers' names with the booking — everyone at the wheel goes on the agreement
- Keep licence, IDP and agreement together in the car — that is what a checkpoint asks for
ImportantThe permit on its own is not a licence. If the French original stays in a drawer at home, the car cannot be driven legally in Thailand and the rental insurance does not apply to you.
What surprises French drivers on Phuket roads?
Roundabouts, for a start. They run clockwise here, and you give way to traffic already on them coming from your right, which feels like a mirror image of home. Take the first few slowly.
Scooters come second. They overtake on both sides, gather at the front at every light and ride along the kerb as if it were a lane. The habit worth building is simple: look in both mirrors before any turn, every time.
And the first drive? Straight out of a long flight from Paris is the version to avoid if you can. The airport is in the far north, the main road south through the middle of the island is wide and has traffic lights, and it is a gentler start than the coast road with its bends above Patong and Karon. Save the hills for the second day.
In town the ceiling is 80 km/h; outside it, 90; on a split highway with two lanes each side, 100. A sign showing less takes priority. As for wine at dinner: the law tolerates 50 mg% (20 on a temporary licence), the rental insurance tolerates nothing. On the hill roads between the beaches you will seldom see 60 on the dial anyway.
Can I drive in Phuket on the French licence alone if I stay longer?
For a holiday, the permis with an IDP is the whole answer. People who move to the island for good eventually look at a Thai driving licence, which is a separate process tied to living here; until then, the French pair keeps you legal and insured.
A long stay does change one thing: the rental itself. For a month or more, one total for the whole period is agreed in chat, the car is delivered to the house, and the deposit and delivery are counted separately. The documents stay exactly the same as for a two-week holiday.

Common questions
Is a French licence enough to rent a car in Phuket?
Not by itself. You need an International Driving Permit and your passport as well, because France is not an ASEAN country.
Can I get an IDP in Thailand if I forgot it?
No. The permit is issued only by the country that issued your licence, so it has to be requested in France before you travel.
Is the old paper French licence accepted?
Yes, if it is still valid in France and you carry the IDP with it. The permit is what makes it readable at a check here.
Which side of the road do they drive on in Phuket?
The left, with the steering wheel on the right. An automatic car makes the switch from France much easier.
Can my partner drive the car too?
Yes, once they are on the agreement with their own licence, IDP and passport. Add them before the trip, since an unlisted driver has no insurance.
What is the minimum age to rent a car in Phuket?
Twenty-one, with at least a year of driving. For premium cars and large SUVs the minimum is 23.
