Can I Drive in Phuket with a Philippine Licence?

Yes. Thailand recognises a valid Philippine driver's licence under the ASEAN agreement on domestic licences, so the card plus your passport is enough to rent and drive a car in Phuket (no International Driving Permit). Your LTO card is already in English, which rules out the one case where ASEAN drivers still need a translation. The real change is the road: Thailand keeps left, the Philippines keeps right.

Do Filipinos need an International Driving Permit in Thailand?

Nope. Both countries are in ASEAN, and ASEAN members accept each other's domestic licences. So what do you actually pack? Your LTO card and your passport. That's it.

The one exception across ASEAN is a licence with no English on it; then an IDP or a certified translation goes with it. A Philippine licence is printed in English, so that case does not apply to you. Keep the physical card, though. A photo on your phone is not something we or a police officer can check.

Is the card still valid?

Look at the expiry date before you fly. The recognition covers a valid licence only, and a card that runs out halfway through the trip leaves you without cover for the second half.

What that means for the rental

You need to be 21 and have held a licence for a year; premium cars and big SUVs are for drivers aged 23 and up. Everyone who will drive is added to the agreement with their card and passport. A driver who is not on it has no insurance, so name the second driver when you book, not on the second day.

Every car we deliver is an automatic. That helps a lot when you switch sides: there is no gear lever to reach for with the wrong hand. The indicator usually sits on the right stalk here, so your first turn will probably start the wipers.

Flying in from Manila or Cebu, you can have the car meet you at the terminal exit or at the hotel, at whatever hour the flight lands. It comes with first-class commercial insurance; the deposit of 5,000–30,000 ฿, depending on the model, is refunded on return, and the price for your dates is confirmed in chat first. Just tell us the dates and the drivers in the chat, or fill in the booking form.

ImportantRecognition under the ASEAN agreement covers a valid licence carried by the driver. An expired card, or a card left at home, means driving without a licence in Thailand, and the rental insurance does not apply.

What is it like to switch from the right to the left?

Odd for a day, then normal. You sit on the right and keep left; at junctions you look right first; on roundabouts traffic runs clockwise and gives way to cars already on them from the right. Take the first drive on flat roads in daylight and the switch settles quickly.

Scooters will feel familiar from home. They overtake on both sides, fill every gap and gather at the front at lights, so check both mirrors before any turn.

Speed tops out at 80 km/h in built-up areas, 90 on open roads and 100 on divided dual carriageways, unless a sign says less. Blood alcohol may legally reach 50 mg% (20 for temporary licences), but for a rental the practical number is zero, since cover ends with the first beer.

  • Check the card's expiry date — it must cover the whole stay
  • Bring the physical LTO card — a phone photo is not accepted
  • Name every driver on the agreement — an unlisted driver is uninsured
  • Look right first when pulling out — traffic comes from that side here
  • Keep card, passport and agreement in the car — checkpoints ask for them

Where should the first drive go?

The airport is in the far north of the island. For the first drive on the left, the main road south through the middle is wide and has traffic lights, a calmer start than the coast road winding over the hills above Patong and Karon.

Rain changes the roads fast here, as it does at home in the wet season. In the first minutes of a downpour the tarmac turns slick, so slow down and leave more space. On the steep drops between bays, let the gearbox hold the car in L or the manual mode.

Parking works differently from Manila too. In high season the beachfront bays of Patong and Kata fill by mid-morning, red and white kerbs are strictly no parking, and evening tow trucks take anything left on them. Shopping centre car parks and your hotel's own spaces are the easy option.

What happens at a police check?

Officers ask for your licence and then the rental agreement, which links you to the car. With an ASEAN licence in English that is usually the whole conversation. Keep the papers together in the glovebox and the stop takes minutes.

One more habit worth bringing: keep the originals in a pouch in the glovebox rather than in the hotel safe. Checks are routine after dark, and a driver who has to go back for the card has already lost the evening.

Common questions

Can I drive in Thailand with a Philippine licence?

Yes. Thailand recognises licences from ASEAN member states, so a valid Philippine card with your passport is enough to rent and drive.

Do I need an IDP with my LTO licence?

No. An IDP or translation is only needed when an ASEAN licence has no English on it, and the Philippine card is in English.

Do they drive on the left in Thailand?

Yes, with the steering wheel on the right. It is the opposite of the Philippines, and an automatic makes the switch easier.

Can my licence be expired if I am renewing it?

No. The card has to be valid for the whole rental, because the recognition covers a valid licence only.

Can my spouse drive too?

Yes, once they are on the agreement with their own valid licence and passport. Add them when you book.

What deposit do you take?

A refundable deposit of 5,000–30,000 ฿, depending on the model. It is held at handover and returned when the car comes back.
