Police Checkpoints in Phuket: What Documents to Carry

At a police checkpoint in Phuket you show a driving licence of the right category, an International Driving Permit and the rental agreement, plus your passport or a copy of it. A document check is an ordinary procedure, and it turns into a problem only when one of these papers is missing or the licence does not cover the vehicle you are driving.

Short answer

Checkpoints are part of normal driving on the island, and in a car they are usually short. The officer looks at who is driving and asks for documents. If the set is complete, the check ends and you drive on. The whole thing is less about the tourist and more about the papers matching the person at the wheel.

The set that answers every question

Your national driving licence of the right category, the International Driving Permit that goes with it, and the rental agreement with your name on it. The IDP is valid only together with the national licence, so carry both, never one without the other. Add the passport or a clear copy of it, and the set is complete.

What is different for a car

Much of the attention at checkpoints goes to scooters and helmets. The helmet rule does not apply to cars, so in a car the questions are about the driver and the documents, not about equipment. The whole check comes down to the papers in the glovebox and in your wallet.

What that means for the rental

The rental agreement is part of your documents on the road. It shows that the car is rented to you and who is allowed to drive it. At handover we inspect the car together, check the body, tyres, air conditioning and fuel level, and give you the agreement in hand. Put it in the glovebox before the first drive and leave it there for the whole trip.

Every person who drives must be on that agreement. A second driver is added in advance with the same documents: passport, national licence and IDP. An unlisted driver at the wheel voids the insurance, as does a missing licence, and a checkpoint is exactly the place where that becomes visible. Our driving licence rules page explains which licences and permits are accepted.

If you are new to left-hand driving, a checkpoint can come up right after a tricky junction. Slow down early, indicate and pull in where the officer shows you, rather than braking hard at the last moment.

Checkpoints can appear at any hour, including late in the evening on the way back from dinner. That is why the documents live in the car rather than in the room: the drive you did not plan, a quick trip to the pharmacy or a late return from the other coast, is exactly the one where a missing paper turns a routine stop into a long one. A photo of each document on your phone is a useful backup, but the originals are what you show.

We deliver an automatic car with first-class commercial insurance to arrivals, your hotel, villa or apartment at any hour, hand over the agreement at delivery and fix the total for your dates in chat, with a refundable deposit. Send your dates on WhatsApp or use the booking form, and tell us who will drive so every name is on the agreement from day one.

Step by step

Most of the work happens before the trip. At the checkpoint itself there are only a few things to do, and all of them are about staying calm.

  • Get the IDP before you fly — it cannot replace the licence, and the licence alone is not the full set
  • Check that the licence category matches a car — the right category is what the officer looks at
  • Put every driver on the agreement in advance — an unlisted driver voids the insurance
  • Keep the agreement and a passport copy in the glovebox — the documents travel with the car
  • At the checkpoint, pull over where shown, headlights on — the officer sees you are following instructions
  • Stay calm and answer briefly — a document check is routine, not an accusation

Common mistakes

Problems at checkpoints come from missing paper, not from the check itself.

The first mistake is leaving the rental agreement in the hotel safe, so the car cannot be matched to the driver. The second is carrying the IDP without the national licence, or the licence without the IDP. The third is letting a friend drive who is not on the agreement. The fourth is arguing or getting nervous, which makes a routine check longer for everyone.

ImportantDriving without a licence, or with a driver who is not on the agreement, voids the insurance. A checkpoint shows it at once, but an accident on the same day would cost far more, so check the documents before every drive.

Common questions

What documents do I need at a police checkpoint in Phuket?

A national driving licence of the right category, an International Driving Permit and the rental agreement. Carry your passport or a copy of it as well.

Is an International Driving Permit enough on its own?

No, the IDP is valid only together with your national driving licence. Carry both on every drive.

Do I need to carry my passport while driving in Thailand?

Carry the passport or a copy of it. It completes the set with the licence, the IDP and the rental agreement.

Where should I keep the rental agreement?

In the car, usually the glovebox. It shows the car is rented to you and who is allowed to drive it.

Does the helmet rule apply to car drivers?

No, the helmet rule is for scooters, not cars. In a car the check is about the driver and the documents.

What happens if my friend is driving and is not on the agreement?

An unlisted driver at the wheel voids the insurance. Add every driver in advance with the same documents.
