Can I Drive in Phuket with a German Licence?

Yes, you can drive a rental car in Phuket on a German licence, but only with an International Driving Permit and your passport alongside the card. Germany is not in ASEAN, so the plastic card on its own does not cover driving in Thailand, and the permit comes from your licence office at home, never from anyone on the island. The bigger change is on the road, because traffic in Thailand keeps to the left.

Is a German licence valid in Thailand?

Valid, yes. Enough on its own, no. Thailand recognises licences from outside ASEAN only together with an International Driving Permit, and the permit is valid only next to the card that it translates. So you travel with three things: the German card, the IDP and your passport.

Where do you get the permit? In Germany, before the flight, from the office that deals with driving licences where you are registered. Nobody in Phuket can issue one, and we see the same message every season from someone who left it in a drawer in Munich. Plan it into the week you book the flights.

A licence in your phone

Germany is moving licences onto phones, and that is fine at home. Here the check is done on paper and plastic: we look at the physical card at handover, and so does a police officer at a checkpoint. Bring the card itself.

What that means for the rental

The terms are the same as for any visitor. Drivers must be 21 or older with at least a year of driving behind them; for premium cars and large SUVs the minimum age is 23. Everyone who will take the wheel goes on the agreement with the same three documents, because an unlisted driver voids the insurance.

Every car we deliver is an automatic, which removes half of the left-side learning curve: no gear lever for the left hand. The indicator and wiper stalks are usually mirrored, so expect the wipers to come on at your first turn. Everyone does it.

Coming in via Bangkok or a Gulf hub, you can collect the car at the Phuket terminal exit or have it brought to your hotel or villa, day or night. First-class commercial insurance is part of the price, the deposit from 5,000–30,000 ฿, depending on the model, comes back at return, and the sum for your dates is confirmed in chat. The dates and the names of everyone driving are all we need, in the chat or on the booking form.

What changes at the wheel for a German driver?

Speed, first of all. The ceilings are 80 km/h in towns and community zones, 90 km/h outside them and 100 km/h on divided roads with two lanes each way, and a sign with a lower number overrules all three. There is no stretch on Phuket where Autobahn habits have anywhere to go; on the hills and beach streets you will rarely reach 60.

Then the scooters. They pass on both sides, filter to the front at every light and treat the edge of the road as a lane. Check both mirrors before any turn and assume there is a scooter in the gap you are about to take.

Thai law puts the alcohol limit at 50 mg% (20 mg% on a probationary licence), but the rental cover is stricter than the law, which ends with any drinking at all. Park the car for the evening and take a taxi back.

  • Apply for the IDP in Germany before you fly — it cannot be issued in Thailand
  • Carry the plastic card, not the phone version — the physical licence is what gets checked
  • Put every driver on the agreement — an unlisted driver voids the insurance
  • Take the first drive in daylight on a flat road — the left side settles in faster
  • Keep all three papers in the car — licence, IDP and the rental agreement

ImportantAn IDP without the German card is not a valid document. If the licence stays at home, the car cannot be driven legally, and the first-class commercial insurance on the rental no longer applies.

How should a German driver plan the first day?

Not straight into Patong at dusk after a night flight. The terminal sits in the far north of the island, and the calmest first drive is the main road south through the middle of Phuket, with wide lanes and traffic lights, rather than the west coast with its bends above the bays.

Before you pull away, sit for a minute and find the controls: the indicator on the right stalk, the wipers on the left, the lights, the air conditioning. At the first roundabout, keep in mind that traffic goes round clockwise and gives way to cars already on it from the right.

Most German drivers tell us the same thing after a few days: the left side stops being the problem quickly, the scooters take longer. Give yourself a quiet afternoon on flat roads before the first hill pass or night drive.

What happens at a police check?

Checkpoints on Phuket look at three papers: the licence, the IDP and the rental agreement. Hand the card and the permit over together, then the agreement, which links you to the car and shows you are allowed to drive it. With everything in one pouch in the glovebox, a stop takes a couple of minutes.

A missing permit is not something to talk your way around. Without it you are driving on a document Thailand does not accept by itself, and whatever happens next, the insurance is no longer part of the picture.

Common questions

Can I rent a car in Phuket with only my German licence?

No. Germany is not an ASEAN member, so the card must travel with an International Driving Permit and your passport. Without the permit neither a police check nor the insurance goes your way.

Where do Germans get an International Driving Permit?

At home, from the office that handles driving licences where you are registered. It cannot be arranged in Thailand, so apply before the trip.

Is the German digital licence accepted in Phuket?

Not for renting or at a roadside check. We look at the physical card at handover, and the police do the same.

Is it hard for a German to drive on the left?

Harder for the first day than after it. An automatic helps a lot, and most drivers settle in after a day or two on quiet roads.

What is the speed limit in Phuket for a car?

Eighty km/h in towns, 90 outside them, 100 on divided roads with two lanes each way. A lower posted sign always wins.

How old do I have to be to rent a car with a German licence?

At least 21, with a year or more of driving. Premium cars and large SUVs need drivers aged 23 or over.
