Can I Drive in Phuket with a UAE Licence?

Yes, a UAE driving licence works for renting and driving a car in Phuket, provided an International Driving Permit and your passport go with it. The UAE is not an ASEAN member, so the card alone does not cover driving in Thailand, and the permit has to come from the UAE, the country that issued the licence, before you travel. The adjustment on arrival is the road, since traffic here keeps left.

Can I use my UAE licence in Thailand?

With a permit, yes. Thailand accepts licences from ASEAN countries on their own; the UAE is not one, so your card needs an International Driving Permit beside it and your passport with both.

Here is the question we get most from UAE residents. Your passport may be Indian, British or Filipino, but the licence is Emirati. Which country issues the permit? The one that issued the licence you will drive on, so the IDP is arranged in the UAE, before the flight. A permit from your home country only works with a licence from that same country.

Two licences in your wallet?

Some residents still hold their original national licence as well. Either can work, as long as the permit you carry matches it: UAE licence with a UAE permit, or home licence with a permit from home. Mixing them does not.

What that means for the rental

Rent from 21 with a year's experience; the premium and large SUV classes start at 23. Everyone who will take the wheel goes on the agreement with the same three documents. An unlisted driver has no insurance, even for a five-minute run to the shop.

Every car we deliver is an automatic, which you will be used to. What changes is the side: you sit on the right and keep left, and the indicator usually moves to the right stalk. The first turn tends to switch the wipers on, and that is the worst of it.

Flying in from Dubai or Abu Dhabi, you can meet the car at the terminal exit or have it handed over at your hotel or villa, at any hour. First-class commercial insurance is included; the refundable deposit is 5,000–30,000 ฿ depending on the model, and the whole price is fixed in chat before you fly. Write in the chat with your dates and drivers, or book through the form.

For the general rules on foreign licences, see driving in Thailand on a foreign licence.

ImportantThe permit is valid only together with the licence it was issued for. A UAE permit with a licence from another country, or a permit with no licence at all, is not accepted, and the rental insurance does not cover that driver.

What is different from driving in the UAE?

Speed, first. After the long straight highways at home, Phuket's limits feel slow: 80 km/h in towns, 90 outside them and 100 on divided roads with two lanes each way, with any lower sign taking priority. Most of the island is hills and beach streets where 60 is already fast.

Then the scooters. They overtake on both sides, collect at the front at every light and ride the edge of the road. Check both mirrors before any turn and never assume a gap is empty.

On a roundabout you go clockwise and yield to whoever is already circling from your right. The drink limit, 50 mg% or 20 for temporary licences, is looser than your own rules at home, but the rental insurance is not: one drink ends it.

  • Get the IDP in the UAE before you fly — it follows the licence, not the passport
  • Carry the physical licence card — the permit only counts next to it
  • Name every driver on the agreement — an unlisted driver has no insurance
  • Look right first when pulling out — traffic comes from that side
  • Keep licence, IDP and agreement together — a checkpoint asks for all three

How should the first drive go?

Flat and in daylight. From the northern tip where the terminal sits, take the central highway south for your first kilometres on the left; the coast road with its switchbacks can wait.

Heat will feel familiar; rain will not. A tropical downpour arrives in minutes, the tarmac turns slick as oil rises to the surface, and stopping distances grow. Slow down, double the gap and turn back at any flooded stretch.

Parking is the other change. There are no huge free car parks by the beaches here: spaces in Patong and Kata go early in high season, a red and white kerb means no parking, and tow trucks clear the beach roads in the evening. Shopping centre car parks and your hotel's own spaces are the calm choice, and shade is worth more than a spot close to the sand.

What happens at a police check?

At a roadside stop, the officer checks licence and permit together, then glances at the rental contract. Three papers together make it a short stop. If the permit is missing or belongs to a different licence, nothing can be fixed at the roadside.

Keep the papers in one pouch in the glovebox rather than on your phone. Checks are routine after dark, and the officer wants the originals, not a scan.

Common questions

Is a UAE driving licence valid in Thailand?

Yes, with an International Driving Permit and your passport. The UAE is not in ASEAN, so the card alone does not cover driving here.

I live in the UAE but my passport is from another country. Where do I get the IDP?

In the UAE, if you will drive on your UAE licence. The permit is issued by the country that issued the licence, not by the country of your passport.

Can I use my home-country licence instead?

Yes, if you carry a permit issued by that same country. The licence and the permit must come from one country.

Which side do they drive on in Phuket?

The left, with the steering wheel on the right. It is the opposite of the UAE, and an automatic makes the switch easier.

What are the speed limits in Phuket?

Eighty km/h in towns, 90 outside them and 100 on divided roads with two lanes each way. A lower posted sign always applies.

What is the minimum age to rent a car?

Twenty-one, with at least a year of driving. For premium cars and large SUVs the minimum age is 23.
