What that means for the car
A small car makes the first drive easier as well as cheaper. The exit from the airport is a loop, then a dense highway on the left, junctions with unfamiliar markings. A short body is simply less to think about there.
What it will not do is carry a full family. Two suitcases go in the boot and that is it, so four adults with luggage end up with bags on laps. For that group the cheap option is a crossover or a minivan, not two economy cars. And if your villa sits at the top of a steep, rough driveway, clearance matters more than the saving.
Is a cheap car at the airport better than a taxi or Grab?
It depends on what the week looks like. For several trips a day, day trips across the island or a family with bags, a rental car is the more predictable cost, because it is fixed for the whole period while Grab prices change with demand in tourist hours.
Grab wins in one situation: you stay in one beach area, walk to dinner and only need rides to the airport and back. Beaches in Phuket are far apart, though, and every trip becomes a separate fare. Count the rides you expect in a day before deciding, and remember the late ones back from dinner.

Where the airport saves you money, and where it does not
Taking the car at arrivals saves the transfer. Bang Tao is 25 minutes from the terminal, Patong 40 to 45, the south of the island an hour and a half, and a taxi for that first run is money you do not spend if the car is already yours.
We meet you at the exit with a sign, night flights included, and the handover in the terminal car park usually takes about fifteen minutes. A delayed flight costs you nothing extra: send the flight number and we wait.
Two small things keep the budget honest on arrival day. A child seat or a second driver is arranged in advance in chat, so the family is not rebooked at the car park. And the first stop is better made at a big supermarket on the way than at a beachfront shop, where water and snacks cost more.
