Phuket Airport to Nai Thon by Car

The drive from Phuket Airport to Nai Thon starts on Thepkrasattri, the wide main road south, and ends over the hills, because the bay sits between two headlands and every way in climbs and drops through tight bends. Plan it as a hill drive rather than a beach road, and add a margin at rush hour and in rain, when the bends slow the whole line of cars.

How long it takes and which road

The trip has two parts that feel nothing alike. First comes Thepkrasattri, the wide main road heading south from the terminal, where you can hold a steady speed and get used to the car. Then comes the approach to the bay itself: Nai Thon lies between two headlands, and the road reaches it from both north and south by climbing over one of them and dropping down to the sea.

Where the traffic stops

Thepkrasattri is the busy part. At rush hour it fills with commuters, trucks and scooters, and in heavy rain the whole column slows down. The hill section is short, but it sets the pace for the end of the trip: tight bends with a drop on one side, so nobody overtakes, and one slow pickup ahead of you means a slow last stretch for everyone behind it.

Getting to Nai Thon without a car is close to impossible, and that is the main reason people take the car straight from the airport. If you have never driven on the left, use the straight part of Thepkrasattri to settle in before the bends; our notes on left-hand driving list the habits to fix first, starting with where to look at junctions.

What that means for the car

Take an automatic. The road into the bay is a climb and a descent with bends in both, so you will pull away uphill and hold the car on the way down. Going down to the beach, use the low range, L or B on the selector, and let the engine do the braking instead of riding the pedal all the way to the bottom.

Luggage and passengers decide the class. Two people with cabin bags fit a hatchback. A family with large suitcases needs a sedan or a compact SUV, and the extra power earns its place on the headland with everyone on board and the air conditioning running.

Fuel is the detail that catches people out here. There are few stations near Nai Thon; the nearest are at Thalang and on the main highway. Fill up on the way from the airport rather than discovering a low gauge on a quiet evening in the bay.

Before you leave the airport, run the air conditioning for a minute and look at the tyres. The hill road after rain is the one place on this trip where worn tread shows itself. A local choosing a car for Nai Thon takes something compact and automatic with good tyres, not the largest car on offer.

If you are landing at Phuket Airport and heading to Nai Thon, we can have the car waiting at arrivals: automatic, first-class commercial insurance, refundable deposit, the total for your dates fixed in chat. Send the dates on WhatsApp or through the booking form; the page on car rental in Nai Thon covers the bay itself, and car rental in Phuket covers the rest of the island.

Car at the airport or car at the hotel?

For most beaches this is an open choice. For Nai Thon it leans one way: without a car you are in a quiet bay with limited facilities and a hill road between you and the shops.

The car at arrivals wins when you land at night, travel with children or carry heavy bags. You load once, drive straight to the bay and can stop for fuel and groceries on the way, instead of arriving at a beach with little around it and no way to go back out.

A taxi or Grab to the hotel, with the car brought there afterwards, makes sense in one situation: you are worn out after the flight, or the left side of the road is new to you and you would rather meet the headland bends rested and in daylight. We deliver to the hotel at any hour, so the car can come the next morning.

  • Night landing with children — car at arrivals, the kids go from the terminal straight into their seats
  • First time driving on the left — taxi to the hotel, car delivered there the next morning
  • Heavy luggage — car at arrivals, one load instead of two
  • A week or longer in the bay — car from day one, because little is within walking distance

Where to park in Nai Thon

Nai Thon stays quiet even at the height of the season, and parking is rarely the fight it is in the busier bays. Where you can, leave the car at your hotel or villa and walk down to the sand.

On the road towards Bang Tao there is a viewpoint with a pull-in above the bay. Stop there for the view, never on the edge of a bend: a car stopped on the hill road outside the pull-in sits in the path of anyone coming round the corner. Whenever you park on a slope, turn the wheels towards the kerb and set the parking brake as well as P.

ImportantAfter rain the headland roads into Nai Thon turn slippery, and the bends are tight with a drop on one side. Brake before each turn, not in it, keep to your lane on blind corners and leave plenty of room behind a scooter, which can slide without warning.

The way back to the airport

Going back, the climb out of the bay comes first, then the main road north to the terminal. Build the day backwards from check-in: the drive, a margin for rush hour or rain, a fuel stop, then time for the handover and the walk to departures. A late start from a quiet bay is the usual way people end up rushing the last part.

Returning the car

Since there is no fuel in the bay, top up at Thalang or on the main highway so the gauge matches what your contract asks for. At the airport, take photos of every side of the car and of the dashboard, then walk round it with our driver. With pickup and return photos side by side, any question about a mark on the paint is settled there and then.

Renting a car for this drive

What a car costs for this trip depends on the class and on how long you keep it: see the price per day in Phuket, and the search gives the total for your dates. We deliver the car to your hotel or villa at any hour, and a refundable deposit is taken at handover, its size depending on the model. First-class commercial insurance is included, and every car we deliver is an automatic, since manual cars are rare in Phuket. Booking, payment and return are explained in how renting a car with Kolesio works. Starting from Phuket Airport? See car rental at Phuket Airport.

Common questions

How far is Nai Thon from Phuket Airport?

It is a drive south on Thepkrasattri and then over the headlands into the bay, through tight bends with a drop on one side. The time depends mostly on rush-hour traffic on the main road and on rain on the hill section, so leave a margin.

How long is the drive from Nai Thon to the airport?

It is the same road in reverse, starting with the climb out of the bay. Leave a generous margin for traffic, rain, a fuel stop at Thalang or on the highway, and the car handover before check-in.

Can you deliver the car at the airport at night?

Yes. We deliver at arrivals or to the hotel at any hour, night landings included. Send your flight and dates on WhatsApp and the car will be there when you walk out.

Do I need an IDP to rent a car at Phuket Airport?

Yes. You need your passport, your national licence and an International Driving Permit, and a second driver has to be added in advance. Our driving licence rules page has the details.

Is it hard to drive from the airport to Nai Thon?

The main road is easy. The last part over the headlands has tight bends with a drop on one side and gets slippery after rain. Drive it in daylight the first time, use low gear downhill and brake before the bends.
