Kamala is easy driving for a group
There is little to decide. One road runs the length of the beach, north towards Surin and Bang Tao, south over the pass to Patong, and almost everything is on it or a hundred metres off it. Two lanes, sensible speeds and no one-way puzzles make a long car easy to handle.
That suits a family that wants one car for everyone: one driver, one set of keys, and the whole group leaves for the beach or the market together.
Beach lanes and hillside driveways need a plan
The two places a seven-seater struggles are the short lanes down to the sand, where there is little room to turn at the end, and the steep private driveways of the hillside villas, where a long car can touch the ground at the lip.
For the beach, leave the minivan in a pull-in on the beach road and walk down. For the villa, send the location pin before you book. If the driveway is the problem, SUV rental in Kamala is a shorter car with more room underneath, and for a larger group two cars may be the answer.
Loaded over the pass, use the gearbox
Patong is about 15 minutes away over the pass. With seven on board, hold a low gear on the climb and let the engine brake on the way down rather than riding the pedal.
The return in the dark from the south of the island crosses two passes and is slower than the map suggests, so plan days in Kata, Karon or Nai Harn as full outings.
Day trips: north for shopping, Laem Singh on foot
The shopping centres and restaurants of Bang Tao are a short drive north along the coast. Laem Singh, the cove between Kamala and Surin, has no road to the sand: drive the 10 minutes on to Surin Beach and park there, ideally before eleven in season, then take the rocky trail of about 15–20 minutes or the local boat in calm weather.
For Phuket's centre, the route from Kamala to Old Town by car crosses the middle of the island on main roads.
