Scooter Rental in Kata Noi, Phuket

A scooter in Kata Noi is for people staying in the bay who want to get to Kata, the viewpoint and the south without waiting for a taxi: the only road out climbs straight over the hill, and few people walk it in the heat. Two riders need 150 cc or more, because a smaller scooter slows almost to walking pace on that climb with a passenger. If your licence has no motorcycle category, or you have never ridden before, this bay is a poor place to learn, and a car is the better choice.

Why rent a scooter in Kata Noi?

Kata Noi is a small bay south of Kata, cut off by a hill. Inside it: the beach, a handful of hotels, and not much else. The pharmacy, the market, cafés with local food and proper shops all start on the other side of that hill.

A scooter turns that climb into five minutes. Coffee in Kata in the morning, the viewpoint over the three bays in the afternoon, dinner towards Nai Harn in the evening, and no waiting for a taxi that is reluctant to come down here in the first place.

Who should not ride here

First-timers. Every trip out of the bay starts with a climb and every trip back ends with a descent and a turn at the bottom. Learn somewhere flat first, or take a car for this stay; nobody enjoys practising on a gradient with a passenger behind them.

What that means for the bike

The hill between Kata and Kata Noi is short but steep, and it shows at once what engine you have. A 125 cc scooter goes up it calmly with one rider. With two, it drops almost to walking pace, which is why couples here take 150 cc or more.

Check the tyres at handover as well. A climb and a descent both load the contact patch harder than flat ground, and on wet concrete worn tread is the difference between a controlled stop and a slide.

The descent into the bay

Going down matters more than going up. At the bottom there is a turn towards the hotels, and braking in it is a bad idea: slow down before it, using front and rear brakes together, smoothly. Test both brakes at handover, not on the first descent.

After rain

Concrete drives up to the hotels on the slope turn slippery in the rain, especially where water runs down them from the hill. Ride up on steady throttle without stopping, and in a real downpour wait it out rather than coming down.

ImportantA car licence does not cover a scooter. If your licence and International Driving Permit have no motorcycle category, the insurance does not apply after a fall, and riding without it is fined at a checkpoint.

Where to park a scooter in Kata Noi

The road along the bay is narrow: a retaining wall on one side, a drop to the sea on the other, and in the middle of the day hotel guests' cars along it. A bike is never left on the carriageway, not even for a minute.

The best times to get down to the water are morning or after four, when the day crowd has gone. On a slope, park the scooter across the gradient rather than along it; on its side stand pointing downhill it can roll off. Take the helmet with you or lock it under the seat, and keep your phone out of that compartment in the heat.

  • Test the brakes before paying — they work non-stop on the slopes of the bay
  • Take 150 cc or more for two — a 125 will not pull a passenger up the hill
  • Park across the slope — along it, a scooter on its side stand rolls
  • Come to the beach early or after four — at midday there is no room

Where to ride from the bay

The closest trip is the viewpoint over the three bays on the road to Nai Harn. The climb is long with bends, and by sunset the platform is crowded with bikes, so go earlier. Beyond it the road drops towards Nai Harn and on to Promthep Cape.

North, through Kata and Karon, is the way to the shops and to Patong. The road to Patong crosses another hill and jams in the season, so in the evening keep to the left edge of the lane and let the faster traffic pass.

East, through Chalong, the ride opens up the rest of the island: the pier where the island boats leave, the Big Buddha on its hill and Phuket Town. It is a longer day on two wheels, so go in the morning, carry a light rain jacket under the seat and fill the tank before you head back, since there is no fuel in the bay itself.

Documents, helmets and delivery

You need your national licence with the motorcycle category, an International Driving Permit showing the same category, and your passport. We do not take your passport as a deposit; the deposit terms are agreed in advance. Two helmets come with the bike, and the passenger wears one every time.

We bring the scooter to your hotel or villa in Kata Noi, including houses on the slope above the bay. Engine size, dates and deposit are settled in writing; send them in the chat or through the booking form, with a note if your drive is steep.

When a car suits Kata Noi better than a scooter

Two people, two small bags: that is a scooter's limit, and the only road out of the bay climbs straight over the hill. With children, suitcases or heavy rain in the forecast, renting a car in Kata Noi is the alternative, and since there is nowhere to collect one on the beach, the car is delivered to the hotel or villa.

Staying high on the slope? Look at SUV rental in Kata. A group of five or more fits better with minivan rental in Kata, and both cars come over the headland to Kata Noi the same way.

Over the hill to Nai Harn on four wheels

The only road out of Kata Noi climbs over the hill, and further south Nai Harn sits in a bowl with a climb on both exits. For a villa there with a steep drive, SUV hire in Nai Harn gives four wheels and a higher seat.

Common questions

What engine size do I need for Kata Noi?

For one rider a 125 cc scooter manages the hill. For two people take 150 cc or more, because a smaller engine slows almost to walking pace on the climb.

Can I ride a scooter on a car licence?

No. You need the motorcycle category on your licence and IDP. Without it the insurance does not apply after a fall.

Do you deliver scooters to Kata Noi?

Yes, to hotels and villas in the bay, including houses on the slope. Tell us if your drive is steep, and we will bring a bike that can climb it.

Is Kata Noi a good place to learn to ride?

Not really. Every trip starts with a climb and ends with a descent and a turn. Learn on flat roads first, or take a car for this stay.

Where do I park at Kata Noi Beach?

Off the carriageway, across the slope, ideally in the morning or after four. Never leave a bike on the narrow beach road itself.

Do you keep my passport as a deposit?

No. The passport stays with you, because you need it at checks. Deposit terms are agreed in writing before delivery.
