How does renting a car in Kata Noi work?

Kata Noi is the small separate bay just south of Kata, with almost no shops and some of the clearest water on the west coast. You name the hotel or villa, we bring the car there and collect it from the same place, or at the airport on your last day.

The whole area hangs on one road. It climbs over the headland between the two bays, comes down into Kata Noi, and carries on south as a winding coast road towards Nai Harn. So every trip out starts with a climb. By car that is two minutes; on foot with shopping bags from Kata in the midday heat it is a small expedition, and that is usually why people here want a car.

When you can skip it

Staying a few days, lying on the beach, eating at the hotel? Then the car sits in the sun. It pays off on trips south, to Patong or to Chalong and the rest of the island.

What that means for the car

It depends on where exactly you sleep. For a hotel down by the beach, an economy automatic covers the hill road and every trip across the island, and a short car fits the tight bays far more easily.

For a house on the slope with a steep concrete drive that you climb several times a day, a crossover is more comfortable. Clearance matters at the kink where the drive leaves the road, and after heavy rain wet concrete is slippery enough that a surer pull uphill is worth having.

Coming down matters more than going up. Take the descent into the bay and the coast road to Nai Harn in a low gear rather than with a foot on the brake; light cars overheat their brakes just as heavy ones do. Where to park in Kata Noi

Parking is tighter than in Kata. The bay is small, there is one road, and hotel guests' cars line it. In high season the beach spaces go in the morning, so arrive early or after four, when the day crowd has thinned.

For a whole day, the practical answer is to leave the car higher up on a side street and walk down; it is a short walk and saves circling the only road. On the slope, use P and the handbrake together, since one of them is not enough here. A yellow and white kerb means no stopping, and there are plenty of them near the beach.

Where to drive from Kata Noi

South is the main direction. Just past the bay is the most photographed viewpoint on the island, looking over three bays in a row, then Nai Harn with its lake and Promthep Cape at sunset. North, the road leads through Kata to Karon and Patong; it is flatter and wider, with fuel stations on the way, which makes it the calmest route for the first days.

East through Chalong opens up the rest of the island: the pier for the boats, the Big Buddha on its hill, Phuket Town, and the long road to the airport.

For supplies, the nearest real shops are over the hill in Kata, and the bigger supermarkets sit on the roads towards Chalong. Fill the tank on the way back from those runs too: there is no fuel station in the bay or on the winding road to Nai Harn, and climbs use more than you expect.

Rain and evenings on the hill

After a downpour water runs down the coast road in a sheet, and the first minutes are the slipperiest, as dust and oil rise to the surface. In that weather go south the long way, through Karon and Chalong. After dark the hill adds oncoming headlights and scooters with a single lamp; take the descent into the bay slower than by day and never cut the bends.

Rental terms

• Deposit: refundable and separate from the rental price, from 5,000 ฿ for most economy cars and up to 30,000 ฿ for the most expensive electric car. Left in cash at handover; a non-cash option is agreed in the chat before delivery.
• Insurance: first-class commercial insurance is included, a policy for commercial use, so the insurer accepts a claim on a rented car. Damage to third parties is covered up to 800,000 ฿; a copy of the policy on request.
• Documents: a passport, a national driving licence and an International Driving Permit for everyone named in the contract. Licences from ASEAN countries follow a different rule: name the country of issue when you book and we confirm in the chat.
• Age: 21 with a year of driving; premium cars and large SUVs from 23.
• Delivery: to your hotel, villa or the airport exit at any hour, night flights included. It is counted separately from the daily rate; the sum for your address is named in the chat.
