What that means for the car

Check the ramp before you choose the model. Many houses on the slopes above Kata are reached by a short, steep concrete driveway with a sharp change of angle at the bottom, and a low sports saloon can touch its nose or its underside there on the first night.

So we ask for the address before we confirm the car. Where the ramp is too steep for a low body, a higher premium model gives the same comfort without the scrape. On the hill roads out of Kata, the rule is the same as for any class: a low gear on the descents, so the brakes stay cool.

Where to keep a luxury car in Kata overnight

On your own pad or in the hotel car park, every night. That is the one habit that keeps a week with an expensive car relaxed.

By day, the bays near the beach are short and fill early, and a large saloon hangs out into the lane. Leave it at the villa and walk down, or drive over the hill to Karon, 5 min away, where the seafront has long free spaces on a flat road.

The evening run from Kata to Nai Harn

Fifteen minutes, and the reason many people choose this class. The road leaves Kata over the short headland to Kata Noi, climbs past the viewpoint above the bay and winds down towards Nai Harn.

Go before sunset. There is almost no dusk here, the light goes in about half an hour, and the hill roads in the south are unlit for their whole length. In daylight the bends are a pleasure in a car that sits well on the road; in the dark, with scooters that often have no rear light, they ask for full attention and a slower pace.

Dinner by the lake at Nai Harn and a calm drive home is a good evening. Dinner with drinks is not: then the car stays parked and you take a taxi, because the insurance does not apply at all to a driver who has been drinking.

Meeting guests at the airport in style

Kata is about 50 min from the terminal, one of the longest runs on the island, and that is where a quiet cabin earns its keep. We meet you at the arrivals exit with a sign at any hour, with the car and the agreement ready for a joint inspection.

Rarely. Over a month the car spends most of its time parked and the village is walkable, so you pay for comfort you use a few evenings a week.
