Karon sits on flat ground, and that is its main difference from its neighbours: inside the area there are no winding roads and no steep climbs. The seafront road runs along the beach with a second street of shops and cafes parallel to it. North the road goes to Patong over the hill, a moderate climb and a descent with two bends that the tour buses also use. South it is five minutes to Kata over a low pass.
So the car is chosen by where you sleep. On the flat, any class works. Hotels on the slope are different: the climbs in the upper part of Karon are short, but with a full car an economy model labours on them, especially in the rain.
