Why Mai Khao and a month go together with a car
Mai Khao is the most spread-out stretch of the island. Resorts sit far apart, separated by pine trees and empty road, and walking between two of them is a serious walk in serious heat. There is no strip of shops and restaurants behind the beach, so a month without a car means a month of waiting for taxis.
The distances are long but easy. By the OSRM route planner Phuket Airport is about 13.7 km and 24 minutes away, Thalang town, with its supermarkets, pharmacies and fuel, about 28 minutes, Boat Avenue in Cherng Talay about 34 minutes, Phuket Old Town about 51 minutes and Patong about 57. Short errands in the north fill most days, and a trip south is best started in the morning.
From the terminal to your resort
The first drive of the month is one of the easiest on the island. You leave the terminal, join the main highway heading north towards the Sarasin bridge and turn off towards the sea at your resort's own road, with no hills and no winding stretches on the way.
That makes collecting the car at arrivals a natural start, even after a night flight: the road is straight, the traffic is thin and you are at the hotel before the first junction becomes an event. If you would rather sleep first, the car can be delivered to the resort the next morning instead.
Which car for a month in Mai Khao?
The terrain is flat and the main highway is straight, so a compact car is fine for the roads. What matters over a month of longer drives is comfort over distance and strong air conditioning.
Look at the last few hundred metres to your door. Many villas and smaller resorts sit at the end of unsealed side lanes off the main road, and on those a crossover is easier, especially after rain. On narrow villa lanes fold the mirrors when you park.
For a family with a pushchair and beach bags the boot matters more here than in a compact beach town, because every outing, even to dinner, starts with loading the car.
Parking at the resort and at the beach
Parking is the easy part of Mai Khao. Every resort has its own car park and a barrier, so register the car with your hotel's security on the first day and the gate stops being a daily conversation.
At the beach there are pull-ins along the coastal road with shade from the pines. Use the marked access points and keep off the sand: rental cars are not for beach driving, and parts of this coast are a protected nesting area. On an empty stretch do not leave bags visible in the car, and never stop on the road itself for a photo, which causes exactly the problems you would expect.
The mainland on your doorstep
From Mai Khao the main highway runs north to the Sarasin bridge, about 10 km and 16 minutes away by the OSRM route planner, with no hills and no winding stretches. That makes a month here a good base for days on the mainland.

Ending the month
