Daily life from the bottom of Promthep
Ya Nui is a small bay with a beach and very little around it, so the daily needs of a month, from groceries to a gym or a school run, are a drive away. The good news is that the drives are short. By the OSRM route planner Nai Harn beach is about 5 minutes away, the Chalong roundabout about 11, Central Phuket about 22, Phuket Old Town about 23 and Patong about 24.
Rawai, next door, is flat and has no swimming beach of its own, which is why people living there come to Nai Harn and Ya Nui to swim. Living at Ya Nui flips that around: the beach is downstairs, and the car is for everything else. Fill up in Rawai on the way back from the shops rather than counting on a station near the bay.
Which car for a month in Ya Nui?
Pick the car for the access road. The road down to the bay is steep and narrow with little room to turn at the bottom, and the car park there is tiny, so a short economy car makes every day easier: it fits the spaces and turns without a three-point shuffle.
If your villa sits up a steep driveway on the surrounding hills, a crossover pulls up it more calmly with a full boot, and over a month you will climb it many times. A long minivan is the wrong tool for this bay unless the group truly needs the seats.

The south as your neighbourhood
A month at Ya Nui puts the whole south within a short drive. Nai Harn, Ya Nui, Ao Sane, Promthep Cape and the windmill all lie within about fifteen minutes of each other, so a swim in one bay and lunch in another never needs a long drive.
From the windmill viewpoint on the upper road you see Nai Harn and Ya Nui together, which neither beach shows you from the sand. When the Ya Nui car park is full, Nai Harn has large parking along the lake and by the beach.
Evenings, sunsets and the unlit hills
It gets dark quickly in the south and the hill sections have no lighting. In the first week, plan to be back on flat ground before sunset until the bends are familiar.
Promthep Cape, about 10 minutes from Nai Harn on the upper road, is the island's sunset point, and its paid car park overflows in the evening. When the sun has gone everyone leaves at once up the same climb; sit with the engine off until the car park thins. Living nearby, you can go at breakfast instead, when the car park is empty and the road is yours.
Rainy months
In a downpour water runs across the southern hill roads. Between Nai Harn and Kata the navigation apps choose the winding road because it is shorter; take the flatter way through Rawai and Chalong by hand. You lose about ten minutes and do not drive downhill through running water.
After heavy rain, give the steep access road to the bay a few minutes. Use a low gear on the way down rather than riding the brakes, and leave the car in P with the handbrake on when you park on any slope.
Ending the month
Phuket Airport is about 48.7 km and 55 minutes away by the OSRM route planner, so on the day you fly either return the car at the terminal with time to spare or have it collected from the house and take a transfer. The return point and hour go into the agreement.
Bring the car back with the same fuel level as at delivery; it is checked against the photos taken at handover. A cash deposit comes back at that inspection, and a hold on a card is released by the bank, which can take several days.
