Kalim sits on Road 4030 just past the roundabout with the dolphin figures at the north end of Patong beach. That position is the whole point: the restaurants and shops of Patong are minutes away, while the evenings at home are quieter.
By the OSRM route planner, Bangla Road is about 4.3 km and 6 minutes away, Kamala beach about 8 minutes north over the pass, Central Phuket about 14 minutes, Phuket Old Town about 16, the Chalong roundabout about 22 and Phuket Airport about 38. Over a month the car earns its keep on everything that is not Patong: the big supermarkets inland, the west coast beaches to the north and the airport runs.
Which car for a month in Kalim?
A compact car is the easier choice here. It fits the roadside spaces along Road 4030, pulls back into the traffic without fuss and handles the climb north towards Kamala, which you will drive often.
For a villa on the slopes above the road, check the last stretch to the gate. If it is steep concrete, a crossover is calmer with a full car. Send a pin before you book and the class is chosen for that drive.

Parking on Road 4030 and in Patong
At Kalim cars are left along Road 4030 where the verge is wide and the kerb is not painted. A red and white kerb means no parking, as everywhere on the island, and in high season it is fined. The roadside spaces fill first in the evening, so for a sunset at the beach arrive an hour early.
For an evening in Patong, the multi-storey car parks of the shopping centres and hotels are what works; the roof of the Jungceylon shopping centre is about ten minutes on foot from Bangla Road. Camera and parking fines reach the rental company with a delay and come out of the deposit, so over a month paid parking is better value than gambling on the kerb.
Turning, the climb and the rain
Do not turn round in the middle of Road 4030. Drive on to the dolphin roundabout or a wide bay and come back from there; it takes a minute and keeps you out of the way of traffic coming over the pass.
Just past the beach the road climbs to the pass towards Kamala, and in rain the tarmac on that climb is slippery, as on every hill around Patong. Slow down before the bends rather than in them, and on the way down use a low gear instead of riding the brakes.
Beaches north and south of Kalim
Over the pass to the north, Kamala beach is about 7 km and 8 minutes away by the OSRM route planner, and Surin lies beyond it on the same coast. To the south, past Patong on its headland, are Tri Trang and Paradise beaches, about fifteen to twenty minutes from Kalim through Patong.
Kalim itself is a reef shore. You can swim when there is no red flag, but from May to October the west coast gets waves and currents, which is when a drive to a calmer bay pays off. Over a month, a car turns all of this into a choice made after breakfast rather than a plan made the night before.
Ending the month
The car can go back at your address or at the airport on the day you fly, about 38 minutes away by the OSRM route planner. The return point and hour go into the agreement, and the car comes back with the same fuel level as at delivery.
