On a week's holiday you can live with taxis. Over a month the short runs come every day, the heat makes a walk along the main road a poor idea, and the car stops being a treat and becomes the way the house works.
The airport is the other half of the case. About 19 minutes is close enough that friends flying in, a visa run or an early flight never turn into a planning exercise.
Which car for a month in Layan?
Choose the car for the driveway, not for the beach. The main northern road is wide and even and the branches to the sea are short, so any ordinary car reaches the sand.
The villas on the slopes towards Layan are reached by short, steep driveways up to the gate. A month means taking that ramp several times a day, often with shopping in the boot and the air conditioning working hard, and pulling away uphill on hot concrete is where a small engine struggles. A crossover or an SUV does it calmly. An economy car is the cheaper and easier choice for a hotel or a house on the flat.
Send the villa name or a map pin before you book. If the last stretch is steep, say so in chat and the class is chosen for that ramp, not for the brochure.
Fuel, the turning and the sand
Fill up in Cherng Talay on the way back from the shops. There are no stations at the northern beaches, and folding fuel into the shopping run saves a special trip at the end of a long day.
The turnings to Layan are narrow lanes with small signs, and they look almost identical. Pin your own lane in the navigation app on the first day and watch the distance rather than the scenery. Heading north, every turn to the sea is a left turn, so you never cut across the oncoming traffic on a fast road.
Where the tarmac ends and sand begins, stop on the firm side and walk the rest. A car stuck in loose sand comes out only with a paid recovery truck, and over a month the temptation to drive a little closer comes up more than once.
Looking after the car over a month
Salt and shade decide how the car looks at the end. Park away from coconut palms, because the nuts come down in earnest. The casuarinas along this coast give the only decent shade on the strip, but they drop needles and resin that bake onto the paint in the sun, so if you park under them, rinse the car the same week. After a day by the sea, clear the salt off the windscreen with the washers before using the wipers.
In the wet season the side lanes have soft verges, and after heavy rain the water stands in pools of unreadable depth. Leave those lanes for a dry day and use the main road. If a warning light comes on, send a photo of the dashboard to the chat the same day rather than driving on and hoping.
Ending the month
The car can go back at your villa or at the airport on the day you fly, and the return point and hour are written into the agreement. Return it with the same fuel level as at delivery. At the return the car is checked against the photos taken at handover.
