The nearest real shops are over the hill in Kata, and the bigger supermarkets sit on the roads towards Chalong. Phuket Airport is the long one: about 47 km and 54 minutes, so on the day you fly leave with time to spare.

North, the road leads through Kata to Karon and Patong; it is flatter and wider, with fuel stations on the way, which makes it the calmest route for the first days of the month. South, the coast road passes the viewpoint above three bays on its way to Nai Harn, the prettier drive and the slower one.

Which car for a month in Kata Noi?

For a hotel down by the beach, an economy automatic covers the hill road and every trip across the island, and a short car fits the tight bays by the water far more easily than a long one.

For a house on the slope with a steep concrete drive that you climb several times a day, a crossover is the calmer choice. Ground clearance matters at the kink where the drive leaves the road, and after heavy rain the wet concrete is slippery enough that a surer pull uphill is worth having every single day of the month, not only on the first one.

Parking in the bay day after day

Parking is tighter than in Kata. The bay is small, there is one road, and hotel guests' cars line it. The only windows with free spaces by the beach are early in the morning and after four in the afternoon.

For a long beach day the practical answer is to leave the car higher up on a side street and walk down: it is a short walk and saves circling the only road. On the slope use P and the handbrake together, because one of them is not enough here. Over a month this becomes routine, and routine is what keeps the bumpers free of the small scrapes that otherwise turn up at the return.

Rain, descents and the coast road

Take the descent into the bay and the coast road to Nai Harn in a low gear rather than with a foot on the brake; light cars overheat their brakes just as heavy ones do. After a downpour water runs down the coast road in a sheet, and the first minutes are the slipperiest, as dust and oil rise to the surface.

In heavy rain the longer way south through Karon and Chalong is the sensible one. After dark the hill adds oncoming headlights and scooters with a single lamp, so take the descent slower than by day and never cut the bends.

Fuel and the end of the month

There is no fuel station in the bay or on the winding road to Nai Harn, and the climbs use more than you expect. Fill the tank on the way back from the shopping runs towards Chalong or Kata so the car never waits half empty at the house.

The car goes back at the house or at the airport on the day you fly, with the same fuel level as at delivery, and it is checked against the handover photos. A cash deposit comes back at that inspection; a hold on a card is released by the bank, which can take several days.
