What actually fits into a week
Seven days on Phuket divides comfortably into four kinds of day. Two beach days where you drive fifteen minutes and stop. Two exploring days: the old town, the viewpoints, the temples, the north. One long day out, either around the island or over the bridge to the mainland. And two days where nothing is planned, which are usually the ones people remember.
The classic mistake of a seven-day plan
The mistake is stacking the exploring days back to back at the start. Phuket's distances look small on a map and drive longer than they read, because the coast road bends and climbs and the traffic pinches at every town. Two big driving days in a row leaves you avoiding the car for the rest of the week.
Alternate instead. Long day, easy day, long day. The car stays a pleasure that way rather than becoming the chore in the plan.
What it means for the car
Over a week you notice things that never register in a day: where the car sleeps, how the salt air treats it, whether the boot really takes your bags with four people aboard.
Overnight parking
Ask your hotel about parking before you arrive, not on the first evening. Most resorts have their own car park. Small guesthouses in Patong and Kata often do not, and the street outside may be a no-parking kerb after dark. Getting this answer early is worth more than any other piece of weekly planning.
Salt and washing
A car parked near the sea for seven days picks up salt film, and rain on top of that leaves it looking worse than it is. Nobody expects you to return a spotless car after a week of beaches. What matters is sand and mess inside, not dust outside. A rinse before you hand it back is a courtesy, not a requirement.
Swapping or extending mid-week
Sometimes the class you chose turns out wrong once real life gets involved: the boot is tight, or the car is bigger than the streets around your hotel. That is fixable and it is better fixed on day two than endured until day seven.

Fuel, fines and everyday running
Fuel stations here are plentiful, most are staffed, and you tell the attendant what you want rather than doing it yourself. Cards work at the large branded stations; keep some cash for the small roadside ones and for parking attendants.
Camera fines
There are speed cameras on the main north-south road, and fines from them arrive after the fact rather than on the spot. That is not a reason to worry, it is a reason to keep to the posted limits on the fast stretch and to tell us if you are stopped by police so nothing surfaces as a surprise later.
The other everyday item is the deposit. Whether it is held on a card or left in cash, agree in writing before you take the car how much it is and when it comes back. A week is long enough for memories to differ; a message thread does not.
Cars that suit this
For two people, a compact automatic is the sweet spot for a week: easy in the narrow streets, easy to park at busy beaches, cheap over the distances you will actually cover.
A family of four with real luggage is better off in a crossover. The extra boot is the point, and the higher seating position genuinely helps on the coast road where the sightlines bend.
One piece of advice for the week
