People take a driver in three cases: a night arrival with children, a whole day moving between beaches and temples, and a trip off the island where the road takes four or five hours.
It costs more than a day of rental but less than assembling a day out of separate taxis. And you never have to think about where to leave the car at the Big Buddha in season, when the car park is full.
We agree the route in the chat beforehand: how many stops, what time you set off, whether there is lunch. Drivers on the island speak English; if you need a Russian-speaking one, we will find one.
A standard day looks like this: leave at nine, four or five stops, back by seven. The driver waits in the car parks, and you think about neither parking time nor the drive home.
For trips to Phang Nga, Krabi or Khao Lak this option beats renting: the road takes several hours each way, and driving yourself after a day of sightseeing is hard work.
Who it suits
Anyone without an international driving permit. This is a lawful way to use a car without breaking the rules or putting the insurance at risk.
Anyone who would rather not drive
Driving on the left, winding roads and dense scooter traffic are not everyone idea of a holiday. With a driver the question disappears entirely.
Groups and families
When the day includes dinner with wine, a long stretch with children, or a sightseeing route with stops, a driver is easier than driving yourself.
How it differs from a taxi
A taxi is a single ride from A to B. A car with a driver is a format for several hours or a whole day, with the car staying with you.
The route
It is built around you: stop at a viewpoint, wait an hour at the beach, call in at the supermarket on the way. On a meter that costs more and has to be renegotiated every time.
Predictability
The terms are agreed in advance and do not change along the way — unlike haggling with a street taxi.
