Patong to the Windmill Viewpoint in Phuket by Car
From Patong, the Windmill Viewpoint is a little over half an hour of driving: 15 min over the pass to Karon, 5 min over the hill to Kata, 15 min on the winding road to Nai Harn, then a few minutes up the road towards Promthep Cape. The viewpoint stands on that upper road and looks down on Nai Harn and Ya Nui at once. The time holds by day; after sunset the same narrow road fills with everyone leaving Promthep, and the drive back to Patong runs slower and in the dark.

How long is the drive from Patong to the windmill?
Count it in hills, not kilometres. The coast road leaves Patong climbing, crosses the pass and drops you into Karon about 15 min later. One more hill, 5 min, and you roll into Kata. Then the southern road winds for another 15 min down to Nai Harn. From there the upper road heads for Promthep Cape, 10 min away, and the windmill stands on it before the cape.
So: a little over thirty minutes when the road is clear. We add up the stretches instead of quoting one number (each hill slows down on its own schedule). Tour buses on the Karon climb in the morning and the queue on the bend above Kata Noi are the usual reasons it takes longer.
Why stop there at all
Two bays side by side. From the top you see Nai Harn and Ya Nui together, which neither beach shows you from the sand, and it is a good place to decide the afternoon: look first, then pick the bay to drive down to.
When the answer changes
At sunset. Promthep Cape is the island's sunset point, and when the light goes everyone leaves within about ten minutes of each other, down the same narrow road, many of them on scooters with weak lights. The windmill sits right on that road, so an evening visit means joining the wave or letting it pass.
What that means for the car
Width matters more than power. Past Kata Noi the road is barely wide enough for two cars in places, and coaches and pickups come the other way round bends that hide them until the last second. A compact or economy car slips through. A big SUV turns every oncoming coach into a negotiation.
The descent back into Patong is the part people underestimate. Put the automatic in its low gear on the way down instead of riding the brakes from the top of the pass, or the pads overheat before you reach the bay. The drop from Kata towards Nai Harn wants the same treatment.
After dark none of these hill roads is lit: blind bends, no verge, oncoming main beam on the climbs, scooters without rear lights. Check that full beam works before you set off, and wipe the windscreen inside as well as out, because a grimy screen against oncoming headlights is close to opaque.
If you are staying in Patong and want the south for a day, we bring the car to your hotel at any hour: automatic, first-class commercial insurance, refundable deposit of 5,000–30,000 ฿, depending on the model, the total for your dates fixed in chat. Send the dates in the chat or through the booking form; car rental in Patong covers the rest of the area.
Where do I leave the car at the viewpoint?
Only where other cars are already fully off the road. The windmill is a stop on a narrow hill road, and a car left in the lane on a bend pushes everyone coming round it into the wrong lane.
No room? Drive on rather than wait. Below, Nai Harn has a large free car park under the trees by the lake and the beach (the shade is gone by ten in high season). Promthep, 10 min from Nai Harn, has the biggest car park in the south and the biggest crowd. The one at Ya Nui is tiny and full before midday in season; Ya Nui Beach by car describes that steep access road.
- Leave Patong before nine — after that the tour buses set the pace on the Karon climb
- Stop only fully off the carriageway — a car on the bend blocks a lane nobody can see round
- Arrive about forty minutes before sunset if Promthep is next — its car park overflows in the evening
- Come down in low gear — the pads stay cool on both descents
- Sit twenty minutes after the sun sets — the wave leaves and the road empties
- Take the Rawai and Chalong road back in rain or after dark — it is flatter than the three hills
ImportantDo not stop on the bend to take a photo from the driver's seat. The upper road is narrow and the bends are blind, and a car standing in the lane is exactly how collisions happen on the southern hills. Pull in properly or carry on down to Nai Harn.
Is there a calmer way back to Patong?
Yes, and it is worth knowing before dark. Instead of retracing the three hills, head east from Nai Harn through Rawai to Chalong and then north across the island. It is longer, but flatter, and in rain or after sunset that trade is usually worth making. Rawai to Patong by car has both options side by side.
Coming back into the bay after eight, add fifteen minutes: Bangla Road closes to traffic in the evening and the map app sends you around it.
Can I fit the rest of the south into the same trip?
Easily. Nai Harn, Ya Nui, Ao Sane, Promthep Cape and the windmill all lie within about fifteen minutes of each other, so the whole south is one day without a single long drive. What we see work: a swim in the morning, lunch, the windmill in the afternoon light, Promthep for the sunset if you accept the queue afterwards.
Or reverse it and see the cape at breakfast, when the car park is empty and the road down is yours. Patong to Nai Harn by car covers the approach in more detail.

Common questions
How long does it take to drive from Patong to the Windmill Viewpoint?
A little over half an hour in clear traffic. Patong to Karon is 15 min, Karon to Kata 5 min, Kata to Nai Harn 15 min, and the windmill is a few minutes further on the upper road.
Where is the Windmill Viewpoint in Phuket?
In the far south, on the upper road between Nai Harn and Promthep Cape. From it you see the bays of Nai Harn and Ya Nui at the same time.
Is the road to the windmill difficult to drive?
Not difficult, but narrow and winding. The stretch past Kata Noi has blind bends and oncoming coaches, so a smaller car and a low gear on the descents make it easy.
Should I go to the windmill at sunset?
The light is better then, the road is worse. Everyone leaving Promthep comes down the same road within minutes, so either leave straight away or wait about twenty minutes for it to clear.
Can I park at the Windmill Viewpoint?
Stop only where the car is fully off the road. If there is no space, drive down to Nai Harn, where the large free car park under the trees has room.
Is there another way back from the windmill to Patong?
Yes, east through Rawai and Chalong and then north. It is longer than the coast road but flatter, which makes it the better choice in rain or after dark.
How long does the Phuket viewpoint route take from Patong?
About 45 minutes of driving in clear traffic to Promthep Cape: Patong to Karon is 15 min, Karon to Kata 5, Kata to Nai Harn 15, and the upper road from Nai Harn reaches Promthep in about 10, with the windmill before the cape. The Karon viewpoint sits on the Karon to Kata road, and the time at each stop comes on top of the drive.
