Rawai to Patong by Car

From Rawai to Patong there are two ways, along the west coast via Nai Harn, Kata and Karon or through Chalong and over the low hill to Karon, and both finish with the 15 min coast road from Karon over the pass into Patong. We give segment times only, because the full run has not been measured and it changes most at the sunset hour.

Which way and how long

There are two ways from Rawai to Patong, and they meet in Karon. Both finish on the coast road from Karon over the pass into Patong, 15 min. What differs is how you reach Karon.

Along the west coast

West from Rawai the road climbs to Nai Harn, 10 min. From Nai Harn the winding road to Kata takes 15 min, past the viewpoint above Kata Noi: narrow, with sharp bends and good asphalt, the most scenic and most demanding road on the island. Kata to Karon is then 5 min.

Through Chalong

North from Rawai, Chalong and the pier are 15 min on flat road. From the Chalong roundabout the main road heads west over the low hill and down to the Karon seafront. We have not timed that hill segment, so we do not add the pieces into one total.

The two routes differ substantially in time, and the gap grows at the sunset hour. Check both on the navigation before you leave rather than trusting habit.

What that means for the car

Neither route is flat all the way. Rawai itself is flat, with no winding roads inside, but every way out climbs. The coast route adds the Nai Harn and Kata hills, the Chalong route has the low hill to Karon, and both then cross the pass into Patong.

The pass is short but serious: tight blind bends, a climb on one side and an equally steep drop on the other, and narrow lanes where coaches take almost all of their lane in the bends. An automatic with a low range on the selector makes the descent simple.

Good brakes and a car you can place precisely in a narrow lane matter more than size. Fill up in Rawai or towards Chalong before you go: Patong has petrol stations only on its exits, on the road to Kathu and at the foot of the pass, none in the centre.

If you are staying in Rawai and want Patong for an evening out, we can bring an automatic to your house, villa or hotel at any hour: first-class commercial insurance, a refundable deposit, the total for your dates fixed in chat. Send the dates on WhatsApp or through the booking form; car rental in Rawai explains the district.

Choosing the route, step by step

The choice comes down to weather, light and how long you have been driving on the left. The eastern exit through Rawai to Chalong is flatter, wider and calmer than the winding road from Nai Harn to Kata, which makes it the one for rain, night and your first days.

Whichever you pick, the viewpoint at the top of the pass over Patong bay is busy with cars and scooters, and pulling back into traffic needs care. More on that stretch in the Patong to Karon pass, and on the western option in the southern beaches by car.

  • Rain — go through Chalong, the flatter and wider road
  • Night — go through Chalong, the coast hills are unlit end to end
  • First days on the left — go through Chalong, the calmer road
  • Dry daylight and a steady hand — take the coast via Nai Harn and Kata for the views
  • Either way — low gear on the descent into Patong, the pads overheat otherwise

ImportantOn the descent from the pass into Patong, low gear is compulsory. Riding the brakes on that drop overheats the pads, and a coach filling its lane on the next bend leaves no room for a car that will not slow down.

Where to park in Patong

Patong parking starts with the kerb. A plain kerb means you can park. Yellow and white is for a brief stop or a drop-off. Red and white is no stopping at all, and in the evenings the tow truck clears the seafront.

Beach spaces cost money and are gone by lunchtime in high season, so on an evening trip from Rawai do not count on them. Head for the roof of the Jungceylon shopping centre, where there are always spaces and shade, ten minutes' walk from Bangla Road. The free alternative is the narrow side streets nearer the hill above Rat-U-Thit. There is more in where to park in Patong and car rental in Patong.

Two more evening details. Bangla Road closes to traffic from eight and navigation routes you round it, so add fifteen minutes to any trip into the centre after eight. After a downpour the low streets fill to the kerb; do not drive into them.

The way back to Rawai at night

The south at night is dark. Hill roads are unlit for their entire length and need a completely different speed: blind bends, no verge, oncoming main beam on the climbs, scooters often without a rear light. The pass out of Patong is the first of them.

That is the case for the Chalong route home, flatter, wider and calmer than the coast hills past Kata and Nai Harn. Our notes on driving at night have more.

If you have been drinking

Then the car stays in Patong and you take a taxi: with alcohol the insurance does not work at all. Plan it before the evening starts. On-demand taxis reach the far south, but the waits are longest there, and the ride home late in the evening is the hardest to arrange.

Back in Rawai, the seafront has a long free parking row, tight in the evening when the fish restaurants fill and on weekend evenings when locals come to eat. Park a street back. For other districts, see car rental in Chalong or start from car rental in Phuket. For the drive inland instead, see Rawai to Phuket Old Town by car.

Renting a car for this drive

Three pages answer the usual questions before a drive like this: how much a car costs per day, how big the deposit is and what the included insurance covers. The car is brought to Patong, Rawai, Kata or any other area at any hour, night flights included. Every car we deliver has an automatic gearbox, so there is no need to look for a manual car. The price of every model for three days and for a month is on one page with prices and rental terms. If you are staying in Rawai, start with renting a car in Rawai. Also useful before you book: cars with Apple CarPlay.

Common questions

How long does it take from Rawai to Patong?

We measure it in segments, not as one figure. Along the coast: Rawai to Nai Harn 10 min, Nai Harn to Kata 15, Kata to Karon 5, Karon to Patong 15. Through Chalong: Rawai to Chalong 15 min, then an untimed hill to Karon and the same 15 to Patong.

Which route from Rawai to Patong is easier?

Through Chalong. The road from Rawai to Chalong is flat, and the eastern route is wider and calmer than the winding coast road from Nai Harn to Kata. Both routes end with the same pass from Karon into Patong.

Where can I park in Patong in the evening?

On the roof of the Jungceylon shopping centre, where there are always spaces and shade, ten minutes' walk from Bangla Road. Free spaces exist in the narrow side streets near the hill above Rat-U-Thit. Keep off red and white kerbs, which the tow truck clears in the evenings.

Is it safe to drive back to Rawai at night?

Yes, if you drive slowly and sober. Hill roads are unlit, with blind bends, no verge and oncoming main beam, and scooters often lack a rear light. Take the Chalong route home and use low gear on the pass out of Patong.

Can I get a taxi back from Patong to Rawai late?

You can, but expect to wait. On-demand taxis reach the far south, yet the waits there are the longest and a late ride home is the hardest to arrange. If you have been drinking, it is the only option: the insurance does not work.
