Rawai to Phuket Old Town by Car
Rawai to Phuket Old Town is about 35 min by car outside rush hour: 15 min from Rawai to the Chalong roundabout, then 20 min north along the corridor into town. The road is flat and simple the whole way, and the time goes at the two ends, at the roundabout and in the one-way streets of the old quarter. At peak hours the Chalong roundabout stands still, and that is when this answer stops working.

How long does it take to drive from Rawai to Phuket Old Town?
Around 35 minutes when the roads are clear. Two legs, one landmark between them.
From Rawai you head north on the flat road to Chalong, which takes about 15 minutes, and meet the big Chalong roundabout. From there the corridor runs north to Phuket Town, another 20 minutes outside peak hours. No passes, no hill roads, nothing you would call a difficult drive. It is one of the easiest routes in the south of the island.
So where does the time actually go?
At the roundabout and at the end. At rush hour the Chalong roundabout stands still and the corridor crawls behind it, and a 35 minute trip becomes a much longer one. Then comes the old town itself, where every wrong turn in the one-way streets costs you about ten minutes going round again.
If you are staying in Rawai and want a car for trips like this, we deliver to your hotel or villa at any hour: automatic, first-class commercial insurance, refundable deposit, and the total for your dates agreed in the chat before we set off.
What that means for the car
Pick the smallest car that fits your group. The road from Rawai is flat and asks nothing of the engine, and the old town at the end rewards a short, narrow body in every street and every parking space.
An economy automatic is ideal for two. A family can take a crossover, but park it at the edge of the quarter rather than trying to thread it through the centre. The automatic box earns its place on this route in the stop-start traffic around the roundabout, where a clutch would be tiring after a few minutes.
Fill up before you leave the south or on the corridor. There are no petrol stations inside the historic quarter, and a low tank in slow town traffic is a nervous way to spend an afternoon.
Where to park in Phuket Old Town
On the edge, then walk. The historic streets are narrow, many run one way, and parked cars cut them to a single lane, so the plan that works is a car park around the quarter and a few minutes on foot.
Multi-storey car parks are the format that works best here. Kerbside, the kerb colour is the only reliable guide to where you may leave the car, and if the paint is unclear, move on.
- Multi-storey car park at the edge — the calm choice, walk in
- Kerbside with unpainted kerb — only if clearly allowed
- Painted kerb — never, whatever the colour
- Inside the quarter on a weekend evening — do not try
ImportantOn weekends and Sunday evening the walking street closes several central streets to cars, and the car parks nearby fill long before it starts. Arrive early or park further out and walk the last part; on those evenings the old town is a place to be on foot.
Which time of day works best for the drive?
Mid-morning or early afternoon. The morning rush has cleared the Chalong roundabout, the heat has not yet emptied the streets, and the car parks around the old quarter still have space.
Avoid leaving Rawai in the late afternoon if you want an easy drive. The corridor into town fills with the evening flow, and coming back at the same hour you meet it again at the roundabout in the other direction. A dinner in town that finishes after the rush is the gentler plan: the roads south are empty and the drive home is the same simple 35 minutes.
Worth a stop on the way?
Two, if you have the time. Both sit close to the route and neither needs a detour of more than a few minutes.
At Chalong, the Big Buddha turning is a couple of kilometres from the roundabout on the Kata highway, and the climb up the hill is well within what any car does. Chalong Pier, the main departure point for the islands, is a few minutes down one straight road from the same roundabout, which is useful to know if you are booking a boat for another day.
In town itself, Khao Rang is the viewpoint over the city rather than the sea, reached by car on a sealed road with parking near the top. It makes a good last stop before you look for a car park at the edge of the old quarter.
Getting back to Rawai
Reverse the route: south on the corridor to Chalong, then the last 15 minutes to Rawai. After dark, stay on the main road rather than cutting through the hills, and if the evening in town included drinks, leave the car and take a taxi.

About 35 minutes outside rush hour: 15 to the Chalong roundabout and 20 from there to town. At peak times the roundabout adds a lot more.

No. It is flat, with no passes or hill roads. The only tricky parts are the Chalong roundabout at rush hour and the one-way streets in the old quarter.

In a car park at the edge of the historic quarter, ideally a multi-storey one, and walk in. Inside the quarter the streets are narrow and many run one way.

Not inside the historic quarter. Fill up on the way, on the corridor from Chalong or before you leave Rawai.
What is the best time to drive from Rawai to town?
