Patong to Nai Harn by Car
Patong to Nai Harn is three hills in a row along the west coast: 15 min over the pass to Karon, 5 min over the hill to Kata, then 15 min on the winding road down to Nai Harn. At sunset the last stretch fills with everyone leaving Promthep Cape, and in rain or after dark the flatter way through Rawai and Chalong is the better choice for the drive back.

How long it takes and which road
The west coast route breaks into three measured stretches. From Patong it is 15 min on the coast road over the pass to Karon, 5 min over the hill to Kata, and 15 min from Kata on the winding road to Nai Harn. Each stretch has its own climb and its own descent, so the drive feels longer than the map suggests.
Where the time goes
The pass out of Patong is short and steep, with tight blind bends, and coaches take almost all of their lane in them. The Karon to Kata hill is easy, a few minutes in any weather. South of Kata the road narrows: several sharp bends, good asphalt, and places with barely room for two cars.
There is a second way to the far south, inland through Chalong. From Patong the two routes differ substantially in time, and the gap grows at the sunset hour, when everyone who watched the sun go down at Promthep Cape heads north on the same narrow road.
What that means for the car
This is a string of climbs and descents with very little flat road between them. An automatic is the only sensible choice, and on every descent you want L or B selected so the engine does the braking. On the drop from the Patong pass low gear is compulsory; ride the pads and they overheat before you reach Karon.
The south is where a crossover earns its keep: a little more clearance and torque on the gradients, a higher seat to see over the bends. An economy car also makes the trip without trouble in the dry, provided you do not load it to the roof. What matters more than size is width, because on the narrow road past Kata Noi you will meet coaches and pickups coming the other way.
If you are staying in Patong or in the south, we deliver the car to your hotel, villa or apartment at any hour: automatic, first-class commercial insurance, refundable deposit, the total for your dates fixed in chat. Send the dates on WhatsApp or through the booking form; car rental in Nai Harn and car rental in Patong explain how each end of this trip works.
The winding road from Kata, step by step
Kata Noi is cut off by a hill, and the road climbs and falls on a gradient past it. The viewpoint above Kata Noi is on this stretch, and it is the most scenic and the most demanding road on the island. Our page on the southern beaches by car covers the other stops along it.
- Keep well left in the bends — in places the road is barely wide enough for two cars
- Signal early before the viewpoint above Kata Noi — the car behind you is close and not expecting a stop
- Rejoin from the viewpoint only with a long clear gap — the bends on both sides are blind
- Leave before sunset or well after it — in the evening everyone from Promthep is on this road
- Stay in low gear on each descent — the brakes fade on a string of hills
Where to park at Nai Harn
Inside the bay a single-lane loop runs around the lake. There is a large free parking area under the trees and a row along the road. In high season the shade is gone by ten, so come earlier or park on the lake side. The details of the approach and the loop are on our page about driving to Nai Harn Beach.
Nai Harn is a beach where people stay all day, so the car rarely moves once it is parked. Pick a spot you can leave without reversing onto the loop, because it is a single lane and one car backing out holds up everyone behind it.
The way back from Nai Harn to Patong
Nai Harn has two ways out, and both go over hills. The northern one is the winding road back to Kata past the viewpoint above Kata Noi, the way you came. The eastern one runs through Rawai to Chalong: longer in distance, but flatter, wider and calmer. Take the eastern road in rain, at night and in your first days on the island, and join the road north to Patong from Chalong.
At night the hill roads are unlit for their entire length, with blind bends, no verge and oncoming main beam on the climb, and scooters often ride with no rear light. Whichever way you choose, the final pass into Patong needs a far lower speed than in daylight.
There is no convenient petrol station in the bay. The nearest are in Rawai and on the road towards Chalong, so check the gauge before you leave the beach.
Parking back in Patong
Yellow and white kerbs are for a brief stop or drop-off, and a plain kerb is parking. The roof of the Jungceylon shopping centre always has spaces and shade, ten minutes on foot from Bangla Road.
ImportantIf you have been drinking at a sunset bar, the car stays where it is and you take a taxi. Insurance does not work at all when the driver has been drinking, and these unlit hill roads leave no room for error.
Promthep Cape on the same trip
Promthep Cape is 10 min from Nai Harn, so the beach and the sunset fit into one afternoon. Park at the beach first, swim, and drive up to the cape well before the sun starts to drop. Our page on driving to Promthep Cape covers the road up to it.
Renting a car for this drive
No car yet for this trip? It can be delivered to your hotel or villa anywhere on the island, and delivery is counted separately from the daily rental rate. At handover you leave a refundable deposit that depends on the model, and first-class commercial insurance covers the drivers named in the contract. Every car we deliver is an automatic, and renting a manual car in Phuket is rarely an option. Prices by model and the rest of the terms: how car rental with us works. For pick-up in Patong, see cars for rent in Patong. Car rental near the end of the drive: cars for rent in Nai Harn.
Also useful before you book: a car for two weeks.

Common questions
How long is the drive from Patong to Nai Harn?
Three stretches along the west coast: 15 min Patong to Karon, 5 min Karon to Kata, 15 min Kata to Nai Harn. Add time for slow coaches on the pass and for the sunset traffic near Promthep Cape.
Is the road from Kata to Nai Harn dangerous?
Demanding rather than dangerous. It is narrow and winding, with several sharp bends and places barely wide enough for two cars, but the asphalt is good. Drive it in daylight first and keep to low gear on the descents.
Where do I park at Nai Harn Beach?
In the large free parking area under the trees or in the row along the road. In high season the shade is gone by ten, so arrive earlier or park on the lake side of the loop.
Which way should I drive back to Patong at night?
The eastern road through Rawai to Chalong. It is longer but flatter, wider and calmer than the winding road past Kata Noi. The last pass into Patong is still unlit, so slow down there.
Can I combine Nai Harn with sunset at Promthep Cape?
Yes, Promthep Cape is 10 min from Nai Harn. After sunset the winding road north fills with cars, so either wait for it to clear or head back through Rawai and Chalong.
