When does a minivan make sense in Kata?

When the group is big enough that the alternative is two cars.

Five people, or four with the kind of luggage a family brings for two weeks, fill a crossover to the roof. And when is it the wrong car?

When nobody leaves the bay much. Kata is compact enough to live in on foot, the side streets are narrow with scooters parked along them, and the bays near the beach are short. A long body there is a daily chore rather than a comfort, so a group of four travelling light is better off in a crossover.

What that means for the car

Think about the house before you think about the seats. Plenty of Kata villas sit on the slope above the village, reached by a short concrete ramp and a parking pad that was built with an ordinary car in mind.

Where to park a minivan in Kata

Near the beach, only early. The bays along the sand are short, and in the middle of the day a minivan simply will not fit most of them.

Kata to the airport with a full car

Around 50 min in calm traffic, which is one of the longest runs on the island. With five people and all the luggage that is exactly the drive a minivan is for, and we can meet the group in arrivals with it.

Why meet at the airport rather than at the hotel? Because the alternative for a big group is two taxis from the terminal, a long queue for the second one, and the bags split between them.
