How to get there and how long to allow
All drives to the village end in Rawai, the district at the very south of the island. From the airport you take the east road down to the Chalong roundabout and carry on to the Rawai seafront: about 45 minutes on wide roads, with the last part from Chalong taking about 15.
From the west coast it is shorter than it looks on the map. Kata and Karon are about half an hour from Rawai, Patong about 45 minutes. Our Rawai to Patong by car page covers that road in both directions.
From the Old Town the drive is about forty minutes south through Chalong. The road is simple, and the only place that decides the timing is the Chalong roundabout, which gathers the traffic of the whole south in the morning and evening rush.
Finding the village
We have not mapped the village itself on our pages, so set the navigation to the village rather than to Rawai in general, and check the pin before you leave. Inside Rawai you will not get lost: there is a main road along the seafront and a second one from the roundabout towards Chalong, both wide and marked.
The one junction worth a word is the Rawai roundabout. Cars already circling have priority, so you check to the right before joining. Take it slowly the first couple of times.
What that means for the car
Rawai is the gentlest district on the island for someone new to the left side of the road. The ground is flat, speeds are low and there are no hill bends inside the area, so an economy car covers everything here comfortably.
The traffic is local rather than tourist: pickups, school runs and scooters carrying more than looks possible. It moves slowly and predictably, but vehicles stop wherever they happen to be. Keep a gap and do not sit on anyone's bumper.
Fuel stations and workshops are on the road towards Chalong. If the plan continues west over the hills afterwards, fill the tank here, because there are no pumps on the hill roads.
If you are staying in the south, we bring the car to your hotel, house or condo in Rawai at any hour: automatic, first-class commercial insurance, refundable deposit, the total for your dates fixed in chat. Send the dates on WhatsApp or through the booking form; car rental in Rawai covers the district in detail.
Where to park on the Rawai seafront
Parking in Rawai is free everywhere. Spaces line the seafront in one long row, and in daylight you rarely struggle to find one.
The evening is different. Locals and visitors arrive for the fish market and the fish restaurants, and the spaces along the water run out. It is easier to leave the car on a side street or at the far end of the seafront and walk the last hundred metres.
- Park at the far end of the seafront in the evening — there is more room
- Keep clear of the slipways — boats are unloaded there
- Leave space by the market — carts pass right beside parked cars
- Do not take the space in front of a house gate — people need to get in and out
Driving slowly in a village
A village is a place where people live and work, and its lanes are part of their daily routine rather than a sight laid on for visitors. Once you leave the main road, drive at walking pace, park before the lanes get narrow and walk in. You will see more on foot anyway.
The same care applies on the Rawai seafront in general. Near the fish market shoppers step into the road with their bags and cars turn round in the middle of it, so a slow approach and an early stop keep the visit pleasant for everybody.
Leaving is easier later than earlier. At night the Chalong roundabout is clear and the drive north is quicker, while in the evening rush that single junction adds real time.
ImportantDo not squeeze the car into narrow residential lanes or stop in front of gates and slipways. Park on the seafront row or a side street and walk; a blocked gate or slipway gets noticed quickly.
Around it: the fish market, the pier and the southern beaches
The fish rows at Rawai are best before lunch, when the choice is bigger and the sun has not yet heated the car park. The Rawai pier works all day, with speedboats and longtails to the nearer islands, including Coral and Racha, and leaving the car there for the day is normal practice.
The southern beaches are close: Nai Harn and Ya Nui are ten minutes away, Chalong and its pier fifteen. A relaxed half day is the village in the morning, a swim at Nai Harn and lunch by the water.
If you want a longer southern loop, Ao Sane, Promthep Cape and the windmill are all within about fifteen minutes of each other, and the whole south fits into one day without a single long drive.
