From Phuket Airport: How to Get There
The airport is in the north of the island while almost all the accommodation is on the west coast and in the south, so the drive after landing takes between half an hour and an hour and a half. The one thing that breaks that calculation is an evening arrival in high season, when a queue to get out is added to the driving time.

What happens when you walk out of the terminal
Straight past baggage reclaim begins a corridor of desks and people holding signs. One offers a car, another a minibus, a third simply wants to walk you to a counter. The calmest people are those who decided before they flew: they walk out and go to their own driver rather than choosing on the move with suitcases in hand.
There are essentially three options. A shared minibus that takes you to your hotel but collects other passengers and does a loop. A car with a driver to a specific address. And your own rental car, brought to the terminal and handed over with the keys.
What makes your own car different at the exit
It does not end when the ride does. A minibus drops you off and drives away, and from then on you decide every day how to get to the beach, the shop and the viewpoint. A car outside the hotel removes that question entirely from the very first morning.
What that means for the car
The deciding factor on this route is not the passengers but the suitcases. Four adults fit into almost any car; four large suitcases plus hand luggage do not. That is where people get it wrong most often: they count the people and forget to count the bags.
The second factor is the road. Its first half runs along the wide longitudinal highway, easy to drive even when you are tired from the flight. The second begins where you turn towards the sea: it narrows, climbs and starts to wind. If your place is on the west coast, you need a car with pulling power in reserve not at the airport but forty minutes after it.
A child seat
Carrying a child without a seat is not done on this island and is not safe on that very descent to the beaches. The seat is agreed in advance, along with your arrival date — looking for one at one in the morning outside the terminal is pointless.

Step by step
The order is simple and barely changes. A few days before you fly you send your flight number, the address, and how many people and suitcases there are. In reply you get a confirmation and the name of the person meeting you.
After landing you switch your phone on, send a short message, collect your bags and walk out into arrivals. The car is brought to the terminal, and the paperwork and inspection take a few minutes: we walk around the body, look at the tyres and the fuel level, and take photographs.
If your flight is delayed
Nothing is cancelled. The flight is tracked by its number and the meeting moves with it — which is why we ask for the number rather than the time. It is still worth sending a line to say so.
A night arrival and the drive back
At night the island moves faster: the longitudinal highway is empty and the traffic lights blink amber. What gets harder is the last stretch — that same turning down to the beaches, where there is no lighting and motorbikes come out of the dark with no lights. Keep your speed on that section below what you would do by day.
The drive back is planned backwards from your flight. In high season a morning departure from the west coast runs into the school and work traffic, and an hour and a half becomes two. The car is returned at the terminal: an inspection, the keys, and you go to check in.
Returning at the airport is more convenient than it sounds: no hunting for a taxi on your last day and no working out the time to somebody else office.

The documents you will be asked for
The set is standard: your passport, your national licence and an international permit to go with it. An international permit works only together with the national one, and the document itself says so.
A second driver is added at once, not later. If somebody who is not on the contract takes the wheel, the insurance story ends before it begins, and fines become a personal matter too.
