Why you need a car on Panwa

Panwa is a quiet residential headland with resort complexes, a marine research station and an aquarium at the end of it. There are no beaches here in the usual tourist sense, but there are views across the bay and a calm that the west coast lost a long time ago.

That calm has a cost, and the cost is distance. There is no cluster of shops, no strip of restaurants, no market within walking range of most of the housing. Everything ordinary happens at the base of the cape or in the town beyond it, which is a real drive rather than a stroll, especially in the middle of the day.

The other thing a car buys here is the freedom to choose where to eat. Panwa has some excellent places, and they are scattered along the ridge rather than gathered anywhere, so the difference between a good evening and a resort buffet is usually a ten-minute drive.

What it means for the car

There is a single road along the cape and it runs the spine, climbing and dropping the whole way. The surface is decent, but in places the width is such that two oncoming pickups slow down for each other, and the edge of the road is not always where it appears to be from the driver's seat.

That means two things when choosing a car. Something narrow makes the daily passing manoeuvres unremarkable, and something with adequate clearance handles the driveway up to your accommodation without a scrape. On a cape of slopes those two requirements pull in opposite directions, which is why a compact crossover is the usual answer here.

Brakes matter as well, because the ridge road is a sequence of short descents rather than one long one. Use a lower gear and let the engine hold the car on the way down, particularly at the end of a hot day when the pads have already had a working over.

Where to park on Panwa

Resort complexes and residential developments have their own parking, and that is the main option. Street spaces on the cape are few, because the road itself is narrow and a car parked along it interferes with everyone passing.

If your accommodation offers a covered bay, take it. The cape is exposed and there is little shade along the ridge, so a car left out all day gets genuinely hot, and in the wet season the water comes off the slopes and gathers in the low points at the side of the road.

At the tip of the cape there is proper parking by the aquarium and the viewpoints, which is the place to leave the car if you want to spend an hour at the end of the headland. It is also the one spot on Panwa where parking is entirely unremarkable.

• Never stop at a scenic bend, since neither you nor oncoming drivers can see round it
• Check clearance if your housing is on a slope, because a low bumper catches the ramp
• When passing on a narrow stretch, ease over carefully — the shoulder drops away in places
• Fill up in town; there are no fuel stations out on the cape itself
• Test the air conditioning before setting off, as there is little shade and many climbs

The roads off the cape

The base of the cape runs straight into Phuket Town, and the drive is short. That is where the large supermarkets, the markets and the hospitals are, and it is the reason most people here rent a car in the first place. A weekly shop from Panwa is an entirely ordinary errand once you have wheels.

Beyond the town the island opens up. Chalong and the southern beaches are a straightforward run to the southwest, the pier for the islands is close, and the main highway north towards the airport starts just past the town. Nothing from Panwa is far in absolute terms; it is simply all in one direction.

The one thing to plan around is the town's traffic at the end of the working day. Panwa is quiet and the road onto it is quiet, but the junctions where it meets the town are not, and a trip timed badly can double. Shift the supermarket run to the morning and the district behaves perfectly.

Long-term rental on Panwa

Panwa is a long-stay district, and cars here are usually taken by the month or longer. That changes the priorities: fuel economy, easy parking on a private driveway and a body narrow enough for the ridge road matter more than anything that looks good on a specification sheet.

Delivery to the cape works, but send a pin on the map in advance. Addressing inside the residential projects here is confusing even for people who live on the island, and without a map point the driver ends up calling from a junction while you try to describe a turning by landmark.
