A second driver is written into the agreement when the car is collected, and without that entry the insurer looks only at the name on the paper. There is one exception: if only one person actually drives and the other simply travels alongside, there is nobody to add.

Why a second name matters
A rental agreement names one specific person to whom the car was handed over. Everything that happens afterwards on the road is judged by the insurer through that name: who was driving, were they permitted, does their category fit. If somebody else was at the wheel, the assessment stops at that formality, and it stops mattering who was right in the situation itself.
When it becomes real
On short trips around the district the question feels theoretical. It stops being theoretical in two cases: on a long drive where the driving is shared, and after any collision, even a minor one. A scratch in a car park is judged by the same rules as a serious incident.
The second scenario is fatigue. The drive to the mainland takes hours, and somebody travelling alone stops judging their own condition properly by the middle of it. A registered second driver here works not as a piece of paper but as the option to stop and swap.
What is needed from each driver
The set of documents is the same for both: a home licence plus an International Driving Permit. The category has to match what the person is driving: B for a car, A for anything on two wheels. This is where a surprise often surfaces, when one of the two has no motorcycle entry on the permit.
Passport and age
The company takes copies of both passports and enters the details into the agreement. Age limits differ between companies, and that is worth checking before booking if one of the drivers is young or, conversely, older.
Experience is sometimes asked about as well. There may be no formal requirement, but somebody who first drove six months ago and has never driven on the left will find the passes and the dense traffic hard work. That is not about documents but about common sense.
For visitors there is a practical detail: the names in the agreement should be spelled exactly as they appear on the licence. A difference in transliteration turns into an unnecessary conversation later.
ImportantHanding the wheel to somebody who is not in the agreement is the most expensive saving available. After a collision the insurer has every ground to refuse cover in full, and then you pay for the other car's repair out of your own pocket, with the deposit going first.
How it is arranged, step by step
Mention the second driver at booking rather than at collection. Some companies write them straight into the agreement and others use a separate annex, and knowing which in advance is easier than working it out at the counter with suitcases in your hands.
What happens at handover
Both drivers come with their documents, the company enters the details and takes copies. Check that the names in the agreement are written the same way as on the licences.
Confirm separately whether the same insurance and the same excess apply to the second driver. Permitted to drive and covered by the insurance are not always the same wording, and it is worth asking directly before signing.
Photograph the whole signed agreement. Paper has a way of getting lost, and a photograph on a phone is available to both drivers at any moment.
Decide who holds the keys when you are not driving. It sounds trivial until one set is in a beach bag on the far side of the island.
Swapping over on long routes
On island routes there is usually no need to swap: the distances are short. Swapping starts to matter where the mainland starts, on the road over the Sarasin bridge and onwards east or north, where the journey is measured in hours.
How to swap properly
A working rhythm is roughly every ninety minutes, and you swap before you start yawning rather than after. A monotonous flat highway sends you to sleep more effectively than a hill road: on a twisting road the brain is occupied, on a straight one it is not.
Stop to change at fuel stations and rest areas rather than on the verge. The verge of a fast road is where a stationary car is noticed at the last moment, and climbing out on the traffic side is dangerous.
Whoever has just handed over should not fall asleep immediately but watch the road for ten minutes. It makes coming back on duty far easier when the turn comes round again.
TipAgree in advance who drives the unfamiliar sections. The logic is simple: whoever is more confident with driving on the left takes the town approaches and the junctions, and the other takes the long straights.
Questions that come up at the counter
Can a second driver be added in the middle of the rental? Usually yes, but it is a separate action: the person comes with their documents and the agreement is amended. Nothing is arranged retrospectively after something has already happened.
What about the deposit with two drivers? There is one deposit and it stays with whoever signed the agreement. That is worth settling between yourselves in advance, because a deduction for damage reaches the renter regardless of who was driving.
On a bike
With two wheels the story is the same but stricter on category. Somebody without the A entry on their International Driving Permit does not count as permitted even if their name is on the paper, and fines for riding without the right category are separate from the insurance question.
And the thing nobody usually asks about: a passenger who occasionally takes the wheel for five minutes to reach a shop looks exactly like a full time driver to an insurer. Either in the agreement or not driving.
