Renting a Car in Phuket in March
March closes the dry season: the tarmac bakes during the day, and towards the end of the month the first short thunderstorms appear. That combination is what makes March its own thing behind the wheel — weeks of perfect grip, then a sudden evening where the road is slipperier than at any point in the monsoon.

How March differs from February and April
February was dry all the way through, and April brings Songkran with everything that involves. March is the month in between, and its character is a slow handover: three or four weeks that drive exactly like February, then the first storms arriving in the evenings and changing the rules without warning.
The traffic is easing too. The high-season crowd thins through March, the car parks stop being a problem, and the coastal road that queued in December moves. It is one of the more comfortable months to be driving here, because the weather is still reliable and the roads are no longer full.
What March asks of you is attention to the transition. Somewhere in the second half of the month there will be an afternoon when the sky goes dark and the first proper rain in months hits tarmac that has been collecting oil and dust the whole time. That specific fifteen minutes is the most slippery driving of the year.
What it means for the car
The component that matters in March is the tyres. Pressure rises on its own in this heat, so a set that was inflated correctly in a cool morning reads high by the afternoon, and an over-inflated tyre has a smaller contact patch — which is precisely what you do not want when the first storm arrives.
Check them cold
Check pressures early in the day, before the car has been driven far, and set them to the figure on the door pillar rather than to whatever looks reasonable. It takes five minutes at any fuel station and it is the single most useful thing you can do to a rental car this month.
Look at the tread as well while you are down there. A tyre that has spent the dry season on hot tarmac wears faster than one that has not, and March is exactly when the difference starts to matter. If the tread is marginal, say so at handover rather than at the end of the rental.
ImportantThe first rain after a dry spell is more dangerous than a downpour in the middle of the monsoon. Months of oil, rubber dust and diesel lift off the tarmac and float on the water, and grip drops sharply for the first fifteen minutes. Halve your speed, double your distance, and avoid painted lines and metal covers entirely until the road has been properly washed.
Parking in March
There are more free spaces near the beaches than in high season, but February's logic about shade still applies and applies harder — March is hotter than February, and a car left in the open all afternoon becomes genuinely difficult to get into.
Covered garages at the shopping centres remain the best option in the middle of the day, and they are considerably less crowded now than they were a month ago. That combination — easy to park and out of the sun — makes them the natural stopping point on any March itinerary.
Late in the month, add the wet-season habit back into your thinking. When the first storms start, the low corners of car parks begin to gather water again, and the first heavy shower after a dry spell reveals exactly which drains have been blocked by dust since November.
March routes
While it is dry, everything that worked in February still works: the full island loop, the north, the mainland, the unsurfaced approaches to the quieter beaches. This is the last comfortable window for the dirt tracks, and it is worth using rather than saving.
The waterfalls are still at their weakest, so do not build a day around them. The viewpoints, on the other hand, are excellent — the light is strong and the roads to them are empty compared with a month earlier, so parking at the top is straightforward at almost any hour.
Late March is a good time for a mainland trip, because the highway north is quiet and the weather has not yet turned properly. Set off early, do the driving before the heat peaks in the afternoon, and be back on the island before the evening storms that are starting to appear.
Renting in March
Demand falls compared with the peak, the choice widens, and it becomes much easier to agree on a specific class and a specific length of hire. If you were unable to get the car you wanted in the holiday weeks, March is when the fleet becomes available again.
It is also a sensible month for a longer rental. The rates behave differently over a month than over a few days, and March into April is the window where availability is good and the season has not yet flipped to the monsoon pattern.
Ask about the tyres specifically when you book, given what the month does to them, and test the air conditioning at idle at handover. Message us on WhatsApp with your dates and your plans — Telegram works too — and we will tell you honestly whether the class you have in mind matches the driving you are describing.

Common questions
Does the rainy season start in March?
Not properly, though the first short thunderstorms usually appear towards the end of the month. Most of March drives exactly like February, with dry tarmac and reliable conditions.
Why is the first rain more dangerous than monsoon rain?
Because months of oil and dust lift off dry tarmac and float on the water. Grip drops sharply for the first fifteen minutes, especially on painted lines and metal covers, before the road is properly washed.
Do I need a crossover in March?
Not for the weather, since the roads are dry for most of the month. Choose by your accommodation's driveway and by whether you plan to use unsurfaced approaches, not by the calendar.
How hot is March for driving?
Hotter than February and building towards April's peak. The driving is comfortable with air conditioning; the difficulty is the parked car, so shade and a windscreen shade are worth the effort.
Is it easy to rent a car in March?
Easier than in the holiday weeks, since demand falls and the fleet frees up. It is also a good window for a longer rental, before the monsoon pattern establishes itself.
