Which scooter actually carries two
The difference between a bike that will go and a bike that will carry becomes obvious on the first climb. A small-engined scooter with two adults aboard runs out of pull on a gradient, and running out of pull halfway up a pass with traffic behind you is genuinely unpleasant.
What you want is a mid-size engine, a long flat seat rather than a stepped one, and footrests that fold out properly for the passenger. Grab handles matter too: a passenger with nothing to hold ends up gripping the rider, which affects the rider's control at exactly the wrong moments.
Brakes are the other half of it. Two people is a large increase in mass on a light vehicle, and the stopping distance grows with it. A bike with a front disc and brakes that have been maintained is not a luxury here; it is the difference between stopping and nearly stopping.
What it means for the bike
Two people is a constant load on the suspension and the tyres. The rear shock works harder, the rear tyre wears faster, and pressures matter more than they do solo — an under-inflated rear tyre with two aboard makes the bike wallow in a corner in a way that is hard to correct.
Check the pressures
Ask at handover what the rear pressure should be with a passenger, and set it. Most rental scooters run whatever they were last set to, and most of them are set for one rider. It takes two minutes at any fuel station and it changes how the bike handles more than anything else you can do to it.
The other effect is on the brakes on descents. Coming down from a viewpoint or over the pass with two people aboard heats the brakes much faster than riding alone, so use both brakes progressively rather than dragging the rear, and stop for a minute if they start to feel soft.
ImportantBoth people need a fastened helmet, and the passenger's is not optional or decorative. In a fall the passenger usually comes off first and has no control over how they land, and a helmet that is not strapped up leaves before they hit anything. Ask for a second helmet that actually fits rather than accepting whatever is in the box.
Who this does not suit
Anyone getting on a scooter for the first time. Riding with a passenger is harder than riding alone: the balance is different at low speed, the bike takes longer to stop, and a nervous passenger shifting their weight in a bend changes the line. Learn solo first, even if that means a day.
It also does not suit a plan involving heavy luggage. A scooter with two adults is already at its sensible limit, and adding bags on top of that makes it unstable in a way that is not obvious until a crosswind or a sudden brake. If there is luggage, take a car.
And it is a poor choice for the long north-south runs on the main highway. Two-up on a small bike in fast highway traffic, with a limited ability to accelerate out of trouble, is the least comfortable way to cover distance on this island.
Parking and riding two-up
Parking is the same as for any scooter: the marked two-wheeler bays at shops, beaches and markets, never the pavement or a soft verge. The one addition is that with a passenger you want a bay you can push the bike out of, because manoeuvring two-up in a tight space is awkward.
Get on and off in an agreed order. The passenger mounts after the rider has the bike upright and both feet down, and dismounts before the rider does. That sounds obvious and it is the source of most low-speed drops involving two people — a passenger stepping off a bike that is not yet stable.
Ride smoothly. Sharp throttle and sharp braking are unpleasant for a passenger and unsettle the bike, and a passenger who is being thrown around leans against the turn instead of with it. Slow, deliberate inputs make the whole thing easier for both of you.
Routes that work well two-up
The flat part of the island is the natural territory: Rawai, Chalong, Phuket Town and the east coast. Short distances, gentle roads, plenty of places to stop, and no climbs long enough to expose a loaded scooter's limits. That is a genuinely enjoyable day out for two people.
The coastal roads between the west-coast beaches work too, in the quieter hours. They have bends and short hills rather than sustained climbs, and the views are the point. Avoid them at the evening peak, when the traffic is dense and impatient.
What to avoid two-up is the long highway run north and the steepest passes with a fully loaded small bike. If your day includes either of those, take a car for that day.
